Didn't speak the language so was definitely scared! I was 4, I think. My mom and I had gone to the grocery store and as we were walking out my mom realized she had forgotten something and told me to stay with the cart at the front and wait for her to go back and buy what she forgot. I was entranced by the 25 cent machines and was totally zoned out as she was talking to me. When I snapped back to reality I looked around and realized she wasn't there! I panicked and thought she had gone out to the car so I walked out of the store by myself (!!) at night time and went to the car. She wasn't there and I was hysterical! I remember so vividly looking back to the front of the store and saw her looking all around for me with employees of the store in complete panic. When I walked back in this older couple who was sitting on a bench in the front noticed me crying and asked if I was the one who was missing. Finally my mom found me and was PISSED at me! She told me not to tell my dad (they had a bad marriage). When I look back, I think why would my mom leave me by myself at the front of the store? But it was the early 90s and I guess it wasn't as big of a deal, I'm not really sure. I can't imagine the way my mom must have felt thinking I was lost or had been taken by someone. Very scary!
