One time I was ordering food at a busy airport with LO next to me. I took money out of my wallet and handed it to the clerk and looked back down at her. She was gone!! It took me a few seconds to realize she had just moved her short self around the corner to the other side of the counter (three feet away from me) and was crouching down below my visibility. Heart stopper.

I recently lost DD2 at the library. After storytime she took off before I could even get up off the floor. I wasn't too worried because I thought for sure she would just go play with the toys but when I got to the play area she wasn't there. I was basically running through the library calling her name and another mom brought her back to me. She was trying to leave. It was terrifying.

Yes, also for just a few minutes but it was at an amusement park this past summer. I was freaking out because there were thousands of people and I could barely get through the crowds to even look for him- so hard to look for someone three feet tall in a sea of people. It was miserable and when I did find him, I was crying. I think it was good though because he realized how scared I was, and he was a much better listener the rest of the day.

Party for about 3 mins. LO was 2 or 3 and screaming her head off on the side of the fenced house. I couldn't hear her because the party was loud. Basically she was walking to see the caged chickens and her friends left without her seeing. She froze and cried. It was at dusk turning dark. So scary!! I tore through the house asking everyone and then I heard her cries.
Another time LO hid under a blanket and fell asleep. My grandmother couldn't find her. Scared us all to death!! That was the worst 20 mins.

I once helped someone find their lost toddler at the water park. I know that panicked look in a mother's eye. He was nearing the water with no life jacket when I found him at a back pool.

Not yet (23 months), but she doesn't cling to my side like she used to. So I bought her a Road ID bracelet to wear when we go out. It has our phone numbers on it.

Sort of. Once we'd just excited our elevator and I'd started walking to the mailroom. I thought LO was right behind me, but when I looked back, I saw her dart back into the elevator (that someone had already gotten in) just as the doors were closing. I FREAKED thinking she would be on a random floor and would panic, and I wouldn't know which floor to go to. But then the women on the inside of the elevator just pushed the "door open" button and it opened back up. Auuuuughhhh. Crisis averted. It was totally embarrassing.

Yeah, recently DS ran out of a store and when I ran after him he wasn't outside. He does this a lot :bummed: but he always runs right back to where he left us. He just keeps going in circles. Which is why I didn't panic until I ran back to DH and he hadn't seen him. I ran outside again but had no clue where he could have gone. He's not the type to just sit somewhere and wait to be found, so I just pictured him going who knows where and getting completely lost... turns out that he somehow ran right past me and back to DH and we just missed each other.

I told him to stop racing around stores like that, but I'm not sure it sank in.

When she was 21 months for about 2 minutes at my mom's wedding. DH thought I was with her and I thought he was with her. The wedding was on the second floor at a restaurant and she was halfway down the stairs when we found her. It was terrifying especially because she was not steady on the stairs at that point.

@littlejoy: We have this talk often with our oldest and safe people to go up to for help or a place to go that's safe. What's funny is the youngest actually went back to where we told big kids to go if they got lost. He had no idea we told them that, but it was a logical place for him to go thankfully, instead of the wide open front door towards the parking lot.

That's so scary. I'm so sorry you guys went through that!!

We haven't, but our LO is the kind of kid that would absolutely walk away if something catches her eye. This isn't funny, but we joke that she is the kid that would go with anyone who says, "Can you help me find my puppy?". Because of this, I think I hover a bit more than I thought I would.

This thread reminds me that we need to start talking to her about this (she's 3).

We lost our youngest (he's 2) at a party the other day. It was only 3 minutes, but it felt like a lifetime! I was in sheer panic because it only takes a minute and they are gone forever. DH thought I had LO and I thought DH did. I was literally running and a kind stranger just knew the look in my eye and asked who I was looking for. We obviously found him, but still, so scary!

Have you ever lost your LO? How long before you found them?
