@autumnlove: If you friend is looking to go natural diaper route, you can check out earth's best and seventh Gen, you can get a bulk pack from toys r us or amazon.

I believe that honest is also at costco. Might be a little cheaper for you.

For the cake we made, we only used a little less than half the huggies sleeve, so you can get away with one box of Honest diapers. Just use a smaller cake pan.

@autumnlove: I have seen bouquets and cupcakes made out of baby socks/mittens/washcloths, etc. that might be a fun alternative!

I made one for my step sister when she was expecting her first. It turned out really well! I think I used newborn for the top layer or two, and then size 1's for the rest. I'm pretty sure I used Pampers for the newborn, and Kirkland for the 1's.

This is the best picture I can find of it.

@autumnlove: you could make a diaper wreath instead. It uses much less diapers but still looks super cute! I made one for a shower this past weekend. I made a diaper cake too, but I bought a pack large enough to do both.

I think I have seen them with Gerber prefolds and baby wash cloths too. Perhaps not the world's cheapest option but the prefolds could be used as burp cloths and would take up a lot more space than newborn diapers. Combined with one pack of the honest diapers it could make for a beautiful cake!

My shower host friend just told me that this friend who is expecting is planning on using Honest Diapers so maybe a cake with Costco/Pampers/Target diapers won't be appreciated? I think they sell Honest diapers at Target but they seem kinda expensive.

I received two as gifts. Both made with Pampers swaddlers. One was made with 1s and 2s. The other with only 2s. If I were to make one I would make it with 2s. My LO is very long and was in 2s much longer than he was in 1s. Also it was nice to have our fancy diaper cake as decor in his room for a little while!

I recently made one with my BFF and we used huggies size one

I've made several and I usually use Pampers swaddlers in size 1 or 2 if mom has not put any on the registry. I would not use nb size. Someone made me one with nb and I had to donate the diapers because LO was in nb diapers for about a week.

One more thing to mention, since this is for LO2, the person making it decorated it with things for LO1. The top was a crown, with a fairy wand stuck down the tube in the center. They put a tutu with some fun flowers around one of the layers as well.

I thought it was a nice way to incorporate both kiddos.

I received on this week and it was size 3's. They were not my preferred brand (Pampers), we suspect they were a grocery store brand. I'll try them when we get to 3's, but if they don't work for us I will find someone to donate them to.

Our hospital sells small packs of pamper swaddlers very cheaply in their lactation are. They have other baby supplies as well. I know many of my coworkers go there when they make a diaper cake.

I'm fairly certain I did size 1's. I had an excessive amount leftover, so I didn't use any filler in the middle - all diapers on the inside of each layer

I've made a few. I used Pampers Swaddlers before I knew how awesome they were. I think I used size 1's on them. As a parent now, I would probably do the cake with newborn ones or a mix of 1's and newborns.

The first time I made one, I used cheap diapers. But I was young and naive.

The next one I asked my SIL what diapers she preferred because the mom wasn't registered anywhere.

I've usually done each layer with a different size (newborn for the top, then up a side for each larger layer)

One mom said she really liked that because she didn't buy the larger sizes when her baby was born, but it was good to have a few on hand once the baby went up a size.

I used Kirkland/Costco diapers (but ended up being WAY TOO MANY diapers) when I made one. My friend didn't have diapers on her registry... but yes, size 1s should be good. And I put a bottle of champagne in the middle as my "base" and as an extra surprise for the parents!
