@scg00387: It's tricky, right? Because if it was something that allowed expanded access without compromising care, that would be awesome. I think there are no easy answers, for sure!

@scg00387: I agree that the system is broken, but I do also question a system where the doctor is subject to doing what the patient wants to retain them as a client. I worry about over prescribing and overmedicating, and wonder how far outside the scope of suggested practice that they end up drifting in order to please "clients" despite what the evidence base says.

Our chiropractor doesn't accept insurance, but it doesn't seem like that's what you're asking! They do send us a super bill so we can submit to insurance ourselves.

@Mrs. Jacks: Yes, they definitely don't hide their intentions....maybe I'm being naive thinking that they could be profiting but people could still be benefiting who otherwise wouldn't see a doctor at all. They mention later in the article that some policy makers are trying to find a way to balance something like the concierge medicine with low-cost insurance to balance out any necessary hospitalizations.

I have to admit, though I understand and appreciate the value of face to face visits, the idea of conversing with our pediatrician one on one and sending a picture of a rash, for example via text is incredibly appealing. The amount of time I've spent leaving phone messages for the nurse and playing phone tag just to ask a simple question let alone actually make an appointment is absurd!

@scg00387: I read part of that article and the fact that they named their practice after Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" speaks volumes to me. The reason they have the business model that they do is to expand their clientele. It's not charitable do-good-ness. They admit upfront that they are seeking to become part of the 1%. They also acknowledge that if the clients have to be hospitalized for any reason, they will be left holding the entire (large) bill.

@scg00387: ah yes I actually remember hearing about this on NPR one day. It is an interesting concept but I have mixed feeling on concierge healthcare, I suppose.

I haven't, nor have I seen one advertised. I did just read this article (slowly catching up on magazine reading from when baby was born in late November!) though and am not sure how I feel about it: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-11-29/is-concierge-medicine-the-future-of-health-care
@Mrs. Jacks Care to elaborate? Just curious, particularly after having read aforementioned article.
