I had to appear in person with documentation. We can do it online first, then you have the option to go in and do an informal hearing to try to resolve before the formal hearing. Last two years I've done an informal hearing after not being happy with online. I always base it on comps in the neighborhood - we've been valued crazy high relative to others nearby - this year I got it down over 40k! I'm in NY, so we just had to fill out a form and submit it with our appraisal. It was denied which was a huge fiasco, we had to run around to basically everyone who had a say in taxes to get signatures; town, county, school, etc. It was about 5 different ones. After that we met with a mediator (who was supposed to be 3rd party but I call b/s) and the town assessor. I did a comparison of houses in our neighborhood but didn't write up anything formal. At the end of the day the mediator didn't care, but our taxes were written down by about half of what we were asking so not a total loss.</p> <p>Did everyone in the neighborhood/town increase as well? In our county you can appeal online and get an instant offer. I tried again last year and was unsuccessful. I am in the middle of writing my protest but it is definitely not my strong suit! </p>
