I put steel cut oatmeal in my smoothies. I just grind them up before putting in the other ingredients.

@Mrs. Goose: I just always make sure I have leftovers in the fridge from when we have oatmeal!

@MoonMoon: ah, I thought it would be that way in either form. That's part of the reason I add it to my smoothie! I'll have to try cooking, cooling, and adding. Just have to add in that extra time/ step... Haha!

@Mrs. Goose: when you cook, then cool down some starchy foods like potatoes, oatmeal, etc, some of their starch becomes resistant to digestion, so essentially acts like fiber.

No, I'd rather eat a bowl of oatmeal with a smoothie on the side

@MoonMoon: what is resistant starch and why is it good?

Also, does anyone know if all oats have iron added? Even the oats at bull places? That's probably good to have in a smoothie I bet.

I use cooked oats and they make the oatmeal awesome and creamy. Cooked is better anyway, because you're getting the resistant starch after you cool down the oats.

I always have oats in my smoothie. 6 tbsp of rolled oats. I just put it in with everything else and blend well. I don't notice a big change in texture. I like my smoothies thick and cold though fairy of milkshake like) so it has frozen banana, frozen berries, greek yoghurt, and milk. Perhaps blending them beforehand to be more floury would make them better tasting to you? I find you do have to drink the smoothie a bit quicker though because it can taste a bit funky when warm. Mine goes in a stainless steel straw cup (from Starbucks) and stays cold for over an hour with the frozen fruits.

I have but I put them in the blender first, still dry and grind them to a flour consistency. It isn't my favorite but my husband really enjoys it and if ground that way I don't mind it.

I use quaker old fashioned oats in my fruit smoothies. I grind them up first in a dry blender to make a powder texture. I don't really notice a taste difference.

On my request, because I read a blog post about doing this yesterday, my husband put oats in our smoothie this morning. I'll be honest with you - it tastes pretty gross. Maybe we need a different type of smoothie for oats but they sure don't taste great in a fruit smoothie.
