@Cherrybee: sounds like me! I was at my last job for 4.5 years, and took a leap of faith for more money... I've been at this job for 7 months and hate it about 75% of the time!

i have not, but looking back i wish i did. twice. i hated my first two jobs out of college but i forced myself to stay until i found another job. the jobs were both so bad for my self-esteem that i think if my LO ends up going through something similar, i would suggest that he just quit and find a temp job to tide things over if necessary.

I did, but it was because I was moving cities to live near DH (boyfriend at the time) and I needed my current job as a reference to get my foot in the door at the company I now work for. It was really scary, but I had lined up a sublet in my old apt, and had a very short term lease on my new one, so if I didn't get anything by the time that was up, I could have moved in temporarily with DH (obviously, this is before I wanted to officially move in with him). I ended up getting a job offer the day after I moved, thank god.

I should have from my first job out of college, but I didn't have any savings and would have had to leave the city and move back in with my parents. But the job was horrible, I was totally over qualified and under paid, and my boss was insane.

I did two years ago. We depended on my income - but I just couldn't take it any more and in a moment of madness I told my boss I was leaving, typed up my notice and gave it to her. I'd been there 7 months - after 11 years at my previous company, with no such incidents. It was just such a bad company and I was so unhappy there....

Anyway, I got a new job almost immediately..... but to my horror they gave me a bad reference! Long story short, the new job offer was withdrawn and I was out of work for three months. We used all our savings to pay the bills and we only just got through. It was okay, though, because I took my old company to Court and they paid handsomely and apologised for their "mistake" in giving me a bad reference.

It was a very, very hard time. I would advise you to get another job before leaving this one if you can!!!

Yep, and it was scary! I was looking for something new, and I happened to see my job on Craigslist. I'm not sure if they knew I was looking, or if the manager as as tired of me as I was of him. Either way, I didn't want to stay and find out! Still glad I did it, especially since I was able to keep a good relationship with the boss who passed on referrals to me.

I have, but i gave 3 months notice and i loved my job! i just wanted to go on a special church trip to africa with dh, and my job wouldn't have been able to have me leave for 2 weeks in the middle of the school year. i had worked there for a few years and loved it a lot, but it was time for something new!

i ended up taking a few months off to visit my family before looking for a new job. we couldn't 'really' afford it easily, but it was nice :) and it was before LO, so we could make it happen. :)

I did. Dh and I were engaged and he encouraged it. He said he had enough money to support me and it was effecting my health working in such a stressful environment. So I quit.... and dh said I shouldn't look for another job until after our wedding because he didn't want me to not be able to take vacation days for our honeymoon. Then we decided to ttc right after the wedding, and I have health issues that I was scared would blow up (and they did) when I got pregnant. Plus I wanted to be a sahm. So yeah, I haven't worked since.

Once, when I was 18. I was working at a restaurant and I HATED it. 14 hour days, and they never gave me a proper schedule the 3 weeks I worked there. So, I quit. I was still living with my mom though so it didn't really matter. 2 weeks later I had another job.

I did once, but we were stable enough to float ourselves for a few months without me having a job, and I already had a pretty serious interview lined up. I ended up being unemployed for 6 days. It was the right choice.

No way. I'm way too responsible to do something like that. I've always known that I have to stay in good standing with my current employer to get to my next career move. If I left without another job lined up, I would be afraid what a future employer would think when they look at my resume.

Yup! Many times in my college days when I was just quitting totally shit jobs.

And just this summer, when we moved from Dallas to NYC. My husband was offered a new job on May 1st or so....by May 6th-7th we decided to go for it. May 18th he moved (it was so fast!!!!) and

I stayed in Dallas to finish the school year at my old school and moved to NY (actually, by then, hubby had gotten there and decided we would apartment hunt on the NJ side in Hoboken/Jersey City) on June 16th. Had a new job in the suburbs of NJ by June 25th! It was craaaaaazy.

But in that small time frame (May 6th to June 25th), I flew to NYC twice for interviews at different schools---didn't get either.. Then had my third interview the DAY I officially moved with two suitcases on a flight---and got that one. phew! I basically spent every single night from May 6th- June 20th job hunting and sending resumes. And planned a wedding. And rented my house. And moved.

No, the closest I came to doing that was in college when I quit my first full-time job after 6 weeks because it was AWFUL. I ended up working for my SIL a week or so later as a part-time student worker (which honestly...wasn't a whole lot better but I'm so grateful she took pity on me!). I wish I could do that nowadays, but we couldn't survive without my income.

Twice! The first time I was 23.....I was so miserable and was crying all the time. I moved back in with my parents for a few months and quickly found a job before returning to grad school.

Second time I had been thinking of quitting, but was waiting to find a new job before doing so. My job then wanted everyone to sign a non-compete and confidentiality agreement that had terms I couldn't agree to. Since our continued employment was contingent upon signing it, I put in my notice. Money was tight, but we made it work, and it was the best thing I have done.

Both of those experiences have helped me to not always play it safe with career choices.

I think about this every day. I like what I do but I do not like where I do it. I'm applying elsewhere but my field is highly specialized so there's not a lot of other positions out there. DH and I have decided if I do get KU, I won't go back after maternity leave.

@runnerd: I'm sorry :( I've been there and I know how much it sucks... my only advice is not to jump out of the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. Wait for something you really do want... it will come and then you'll look back on the time you spent at your current place and realise how it made you stronger.

@runnerd: Aw. Have you started looking looking for other jobs? What do you think the chances of you finding something in a short space of time are? If you're set on moving, won't you have to find another job anyway?

I walked out of 2 jobs when I was younger without having anything else lined up... but these were just run of the mill waitressing/bar work gigs and it was easy to walk into something else. I got so fed up at my last but one job and it took me about 6mths of trying to find something worth leaving for until I got my last job, but I couldn't leave without having something else as we couldn't afford it at the time.

One time. My boss was crazy and was stressing me out so much that I was getting tension headaches 4-6 times a week, while pregnant. My doctor told me that I needed to get out of there, so I called her one morning and said that I had to quit due to medical reasons. Got a different job about 3 weeks later, so much better!
P.S. 2 days after I quit, 2 more people did too. She was that bad.

Yup! I was moving from NYC to Nashville for my husband and it was just becoming too difficult to job search long distance... Plus my lease was up in NYC! He made enough money for us to be fine so we weren't too worried. And then I got lucky and got a job offer while I was in the car driving down to TN with all my stuff!
