One time. It was the job I held before this one, and it was at a point where the thought of even going to work was giving me tension headaches. I was so stressed out and every time my phone went off I was afraid it was my boss. I was about 20 weeks pregnant at the time and told her that my doctor recommended me leaving right away due to stress. I started working at my husband's company about 3 weeks later.

@runnerd: I completely agree. If I hadn't already found a new job in a completely different industry I would have NEVER done it! I had only been there a few months so I certainly wasn't attached. Wish I would have been more adult about it, but live and learn :-)

@LinzR: lol! I used to daydream about the awesome feeling of walking out on my old job - felt like I was drowning there! But it was my big girl job so no way I could do that :) still think it would be awesome if didn't have to worry about burned bridges

I walked out of my last job in hospitality. I was in management too, eek. I had already found a new position outside of the industry and was planning on putting in my notice in about a week when my boss called me stupid. So I got up, wrote I quit on a sticky note and walked out. Then cried the entire ride home. Things had gotten really terrible there and the 6 months I was there were longer than anyone else who'd ever held that position.

Do I regret it? Maybe. I love my job now, would not list that job as a reference, but wish I could have handled in more professionally.

Did it feel a little awesome? Yep.

Update:

I just emailed my boss (she prefers email rather that phone calls), and explained the situation and I offered to work this Sunday, but if not I would be happy to return the office keys sooner. We will see what she says!

I told her in the nicest way possible, so hopefully she isn't too upset. Eek...

I walked out on the job, two different times, at two different waitressing jobs when I was in college. They were both TERRIBLE restaurants with terrible managers though. One tried to short me money at the end of my shift to pay for a mistake the guy counting out tips at the end of the night made, so I quit (I hated the job anyway and found another job the same week). The second job was at the Olive Garden (omg) with another worst manager ever. I was really sick with a stomach bug the morning of a double shift on a Sunday, but when I called in, the manager said I would be fired if I didn't show. So I went, and threw up right at the entrance of the back door on my way in. I told him I'd just thrown up and he told me to work. I made it about 3 hours before I just quit and went home. JERK!

Anyway, I lived in a city, so there was no shortage of places to find a waitressing job, and those types of jobs don't tend to ask for work references anyway--you can just write your friend's names on the applications and they don't call them anyway. It didn't make finding a new job any harder, but I would give my two weeks if the managers were nice (I gave notice at all my other part time jobs, and I had many).

I've never done it at a professional job though.

Part time jobs - yes. One holiday gig at Kohl's and a telemarketing job where I worked there for half a day and never even went back for my check. :)

I did once, but it was kind of a weird situation. I got a part-time job waitressing at a Chinese restaurant in college, but I only worked one night there and never went back. The owner was the chef's son-in-law and they did NOT get along, and the chef was very temperamental so people were calling to order Chinese food and being told it would take 2 hours, and by the end of the night, the owner just gave me cash and told me he would understand if he didn't see me the next night lol. I think he was used to people just never coming back. So I didn't -- but even in that situation, I felt terrible! I think I would just feel too guilty not to at least give them the option.

@MrsBrewer: I did and I still feel horrible about it. I had moved out of state and was completely miserable living and working there. The interview process took so long that I was without work and a paycheck for much longer than I had anticipated. I desperately needed to make some money to move home (where my old job took me back instantly, thank goodness!).

I wouldn't worry about a part time job though. If you offer to work this week, they'll probably appreciate it and may not even take you up on it if they don't need to.

I did once, my high school job. I just followed what my friends did. There were lots of people to work there and a couple of us were done so we just never showed up again. Never called nothing, just didn't go back. Probably stupid at the time but that's what we did.

@MrsBrewer: when I was in college I worked at VS and HATED IT! I took off a few days for spring break, and on my way out of town called them and said I wouldn't be returning so not to put me on the schedule.

My hubs had a second job a few years ago in retail. When he gave his notice, he gave his shifts away for the next week and never went back.

It happens :)

Then that day when I fended off an advance, the guy got violent and that was the last straw. Done. No amount of money is worth letting yourself be put through that.

I never have...I usually give more than 2 weeks because I am a sucker! In your case I'd give 2 weeks notice, just because it's the nice thing to do and I think it's better to not burn bridges--you never know what the future will hold!

If it is only one day a week, I would give notice and ask if they would like you to work the next two weeks. They might just say no. I really believe in not burning any bridges because life can change so quickly, it is always nice to leave people thinking positive things about you.

I have a 2nd part time job, that I work every Sunday. It's really boring, and DH just got a new job and we really don't need the money from it any more. I want ot quit, plus with the holidays it will make it sooo much easier. They are very well staffed (I just called in sick this last week Sunday because I really was sick) and my boss said not to worry about it that there was plenty of people working.

I'm thinking about calling her and telling her I'm done and I quit. I'm never going to use them as a job reference, and I really didn't make any friends or lasting relationships there. I've also only worked there since August.

Would it be a jerk move to just quit without 2 weeks? Have you ever quit a job without giving 2 weeks?
