@Shizaz: yes but servers get a fraction of the minimum wage and BoH is more than likely over. I remember when I was a line cook and my starting wage was around the 9$ mark (min wage at the time was 7~ish and servers were getting 5-6$). It's only fair that the servers receive a majority :)

@sera_87: some places do that, yes. But not all. And it's impossible to know unless you ask. It's also very rarely a 50/50 split. I remember my brother got a job in a kitchen and was excited that it was a 60-40 split. Servers always get the majority of the tips - at least where I live.

@woodentulip: Because tips are the usual, some servers make a much lower base. But a lot of states are changing that.

I am confused. In the US, do servers make less than minimum wage? I don't think that is legal in Canada...but someone correct me if I am wrong.

...I would say that even at minimum wage, I relied on tips as a server when I did it for one summer in university!

I have been a waitress, a bus person, and a bar tender. So, yup. But I think there is a difference in expecting a tip if you make less than minimum wage for that purpose and making a good salary and still expecting a tip. I tip hairdressers, cab drivers, waiters etc, bellhops, valets, etc. but not garbage men, postal workers and the like.

@Shizaz: most places split the tips between the BoH and servers, so yes, the people who cooked your food are still getting a portion of whatever you tipped your server.

@MaryM: "It's not about a person "expecting" a tip, but about us expecting amazing service and being willing to pay for it." -Yes. Totally agree.

I was a bartender for over a decade, my husband is currently still bartending. Tips have always been a big part of our lives.

At different times DH has relied on tips. Since we've been married he's been in managerial roles so we haven't lived off them, but he now makes less than he did when he was working for tips (go figure) in the same restaurants.

He is an awesome tipper. For us it's about service. He often tips before we're served.

I never worked a job that gave tips, so my answer is no. But where I live it's illegal to pay servers less than minimum wage, so tips are bonus - however I still feel like there is an expectation to tip, regardless of the service you receive. Which is just plain annoying.

I also feel like who we are "required" to tip is completely arbitrary and it definitely has gotten out of hand. Why do you tip the server who brings you the food (which I could really do myself), but not the people who actually cooked it? (looking at how restaurants are run in the kitchen on TV makes a servers job look like a piece of cake!)
Why do you tip a taxi driver and not a bus driver? Or an airline pilot?

I feel like it's become an expectation in society, when it should be seen more as a "gift" for going above and beyond. Tipping shouldn't give me great service in a restaurant - great service should be a part of that persons job. If they go above and beyond what is expected, then that deserves a tip.

I worked as a waitress in high school, so while, I didn't depend on tips to live, it was nice to receive them. But I also lived in an area where people would tip $1 per person and not base the tip amount off of the check amount, so I barely made any tips. That said, when I had a real job, I received a cash bonus/"tip" at the end of the year from one of the other managers in the office, I was totally not expecting it and was completely baffled as to why she gave it to me, but it did make me feel appreciated!

I haven't ever worked in a job where I received tips. Now, I'm glad I live in a state where there's no minimum wage carve-out for tipped professions (i.e. servers must be paid at least minimum wage and tips are on top of that), plus has one of the highest minimum wages in the country. I still tip well for good service but it makes me feel better to know that the servers are (somewhat) closer to being fairly paid.

yes, I waitressed right out of college - but everyone knows that they rely on tips so its normal

I do think more and more people expect tips - our garbage men leave us a Christmas card every year - I imagine they are looking for a nice tip as well

No, as a hostess I got paid minimum wage. They were a nice supplement when I got them though! I also think it's horrible how the food service industry forces servers to rely on tips to make up the remainder of their pay.

There was an interesting discussion on another thread about tips expectations getting out of control these days! It got me thinking that my thoughts on tipping have changed ever since I had to rely on tips: not only for money, but for the morale boost. It's hard to convey just how much each and every tip meant to me at the time! So now I try and pay it forward.

That said, I do agree that everyone seems to expect a tip these days - whether or not they're actually working hard. It's a tough balance to be fair but when I'm not sure, I try to err on the side of tipping. I think it's terrible how some professions (like serving food) are allowed to pay so little, and force people to depend almost entirely on tips.
