I had to call my dad to the window to verify that's what it was (it was a rare super south occurrence) and that something in the distance wasn't majorly on fire! It's such a crap shoot. I was in Fairbanks in January and we even went further out of the city a few nights hoping it would happen. I was a kid and I remember it was on the news that there was a chance we might see them. The sky just kind of glowed red in parts. @Greentea: I saw a rainbow around the moon once camping as a kid. Sounds perfect since I hate being cold and you don't have to go outside. We didn't end up pulling the trigger but it seems like a fairly easy trip to do with a baby, so we might do it next winter. DH in particular really wants to see the aurora. Haven't seen them yet. When we were in Alaska I looked and we had to get up at 3-4am to see them and if it was a clear sky. Someone told us it was out one day and we missed it. I heard Iceland is a good place to catch them at some times of year. Alaska too. I was lucky to see them on a trip in Alaska, but it was late summer and we only saw them once in two weeks. It was some very unusual solar storm, so they were visible way further south than usual. It was a once in a lifetime experience, though I hope to see them again someday.
