Yes, 2 years ago! It was an attempted murder case. It was really interesting! I'd love to serve again but I haven't received a jury summons since that one time 2 years ago. :(

@Foodnerd81: @lawbee11: Yeah, the lawyer on mine did real estate law...I only figured that out after he gave me his card and a long time later we ended up doing the closing for our house at his firm. But it was because of his explanations of the law that I decided to only say the guy was guilty on some of the counts even though I thought he molested all of the boys.

@spaniellove: @Foodnerd81: It definitely happens. Attorneys only get a limited number of "strikes," so sometimes a lawyer is the better option to have on the jury. I hope I get picked--I would love to serve!

@lawbee11: @spaniellove: Yup, there was a lawyer on my jury too. He was the foreman. I don't believe he did criminal law, though.

I've been called for jury duty about eight times. I was only able to serve once though and one of the sides didn't want me on the jury so I got dismissed. I'd really like to serve one day. I think it's important.

@twodoghouse: that poor woman! It must have been hard not being able to do anything about her situation.

I have been called a few times, but was always able to get out of it because I was a full-time student. Now that I am an attorney, I will almost certainly never get chosen if I do get called again.

I interned for a judge my first year of law school, and watching the jury be chosen was always my favorite part of the trial--it's so interesting!

I did a couple weeks ago and was chosen to sit on a case. It was a domestic battery case and was really awful. The state was the one prosecuting the case and the (alleged) victim had been subpoenaed to be there and testify. When it was her time to testify, she said the defendant had not touched her, never had, she'd never been afraid of him, it was not her handwriting on the form that had been filled out, etc. Basically the whole case fell apart because apparently the state had no other evidence than what the woman had previously said. We found him non-guilty, although we (the jury) all felt that he probably had hurt her. I guess this happening isn't that uncommon with domestic battery cases, but it was just really really sad.

I served on a jury a few years ago. It was really tough - a child molestation case for a group of boys who were now older than me. It was so frustrating to hear the things other jurors actually believed: that they were just interested in sex, someone in such a public position would never do that, they're just looking for money, my child would tell me if someone touched them so this can't be true, etc. The younger more educated jurors had clearly been exposed to more information about child abuse, while the less educated/less progressive-minded jurors hadn't.

I've been called 3 times and been picked for a jury all 3 times. The most recent time I was even the foreman (foreperson?). Every single time I knew I was going to be picked because I was the only person in the jury pool that appeared to be under 40 and I was the only minority. 2 drunk driving cases and the last one was... I don't even remember. Some kind of domestic dispute. All three cases were total BS... it was pretty evident that the defendant was guilty but the lawyers couldn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt so all three were proven not guilty. All three cases were being tried at least a year or two after the incident happened so the police officers and etc. could barely remember the details of the incident... they could only go on their police reports and lawyers can just tear those apart easily. (i.e. exactly what time was the breathalyzer taken vs. what time the defendant claimed he had one beer, because the amount of alcohol in someone's breath peaks at different times according to their body weight, etc....)

Some people think my frequency of serving on a jury is exciting, but to me it was just a lot of time sitting in a chair listening to people whine. One lawyer seriously thought he was Johnny Cochran-- even dressed like him-- and very passionately pleaded the case of his client (a young man arrested for a DUI). I guess it worked since we had to declare him not guilty!

I served on a jury for 2 days--robbery case. We sent the guy to the pen for 6 yrs because he wouldn't quit stealing things! I thought it was a very interesting experience, and I got to miss work as a bonus.

I felt like the lawyers really wanted me on the jury--when they were asking things before eliminating people they asked me several direct questions and kept staring at me...I was 25 or so, maybe they really wanted a young person? Or maybe I was just unlucky--out of hundreds of jurors that day, my juror number was one of the first 10!

@chopsuey119: They accepted that? When I got called in college, in Mass, it didn't matter if you were a student, they just said to reschedule it for a day you didn't have class. My friend had to cry to the judge to get out of a trial that would go into finals.

I have. I was on an attempted murder (among other charges) trial. It was awful. I cried when it was over because I felt like I just took any chance at a future away from a kid. He was 17. Many of my fellow jurors were racist a**holes. It was a very disturbing experience for me.

I was on a jury when I lived in NYC. It lasted almost a week, and I hated my job at the time and got full pay for the days, so it was awesome! It was like living in a really, really boring episode of Law and Order.
I've been called for it a lot of times-- once in college, sat in the jury room for a few hours and they sent us all home, not trials; once when I moved back to my parents' house after college, but I moved right after I was called so didn't have to do it; the time I was on a jury in NYC; and I got called after I moved up here to Boston, sat in a room and read all day and got sent home. So I've been called 4 times in about 10 years, but only went in 2 times. Like you I think it's because I've moved so much.

I got called last year but was exempt since I served in another district a couple years ago. I just got another notice because they've lowered the frequency with which you have to serve now. I get called for jury duty so often because I've moved so many times. But I've never been picked for a jury! I would love to actually serve, but it sucks wasting a whole day and not be picked.

Have you ever served?
