"Dinner parties" seem more formal/thought out to me. I don't know what makes them different...maybe more structured and a little more formal? We try to do a theme of sorts to make it fun. One year we did a "Last Supper" potluck where you were to bring the dish that you would choose to have if it were your last meal ever.
