When I was in high school my dad (a journalist) would pay me to transcribe his interviews. I had an old tape recorder with a foot pedal for playback like Mrs. Cat in the Cradle. That made it a bit easier.

Yes, interviews, meetings, dictation when I worked in a legal secretarial pool. It can be very tough, but once you get the vocal patterns down for the speaker(s) it gets easier. Also using digital audio with a transcription program that has a foot pedal to control the playback also helps.

I have my master's in journalism and, while I no longer work in that field, I do have considerable experience transcribing interviews.

The best advice I can give you is to get some transcription software (I wish I could remember the names of some programs...sorry!), which allows you to listen to the interviews at the same speed at which you type, so you don't need to constantly start and stop. Still not very exciting, but it does enable you to finish it much more quickly.

Omg, I had to do 10 45-min interviews over the summer for my graduate research and it was effing BRUTAL!!! Like you said, there's no good distraction bc you have to listen so carefully! I wish my advisor would've sprung for the digital transcriber but no dice, I did it all by hand...I'm now doing shorter follow-up interviews that are still hard to get through!

@Honeybee: I use Dragon for my personal writing at home. It's pretty cool, though the system has to learn your quirks, which makes for some interesting sentences.

My husband uses transcription software in his work. He just uses a digital recorder and then uploads the file to the software, so the corrections are pretty minimal. If you have to do a lot of transcribing, maybe something like this will help?

I've never done this, but I do listen to audiobooks everyday! I have one in my car, so everytime I'm driving somewhere I listen to my book instead of the radio!

I write articles for my job's magazine, so I have to transcribe interviews or speeches from events about 4x a year. It's such a pain!

It's worse when it's transcription from a clunky old tape recorder because I have to stop typing to press "stop" or "rewind." At least if it's something viewable online I can use the space bar to stop and start while transcribing. We don't have one of those fancy recorders that has software to transcibe.

Although now I just get an intern or our office manager to do it for me! Score!

I did an interview for Hellobee, and used a website service to transcribe it. But I still had to manually review the result, and I found lots of little nits and stuff to correct.

Ugh, transcription is so much work! It's not really a good fit with my personality... I like to listen to music when I do boring work, but I can't do that here since I have to listen to the audio recording.

I'm slogging through it anyway though, since I'd love to see more interviews on the site and we gotta figure this stuff if we're going to do that.

Have you ever transcribed interviews before? How did it go for you?
