So thrilled to see this thread! DH and I have had some issues with K running off - she is SO fast as some of you have mentioned - and I have been having a mental struggle with if a "leash" is ok. I love seeing all the moms using it - makes me feel ok. Like most of you - I am comfortable doing what it take and getting the judgement stares as long as my daughter is safe and my sanity is protected!

Any recommendations on which ones you like?

We haven't (yet) because Char listens to us and is pretty shy in new situations, so she doesn't like to be away from us. BUT Harry just started walking and I think he's going to be a wild child-- we are hoping to not use one, but who knows.

@aderyn: I have no idea what any of this means.

I was talking to her teacher last week, and I said, " I never thought I'd be that kind of parent," to which she responded, "yes, well, she's that kind of girl". Lesson learned: don't judge, lest you yours be judged. I stand corrected and am quite glad for ours. It has come in handy already.

We tried and failed! We were traveling internationally and didn't have our stroller. DS was acting up, so our friend let us borrow hers, which went around my wrist and his wrist. He looked at it like wtf? :silly: It was either loose so he wriggled out or so tight I felt bad for his wrist. We lasted less than a night.

I haven't used one, but I only have the one toddler and she's pretty good about staying near me, holding my hand, etc. If she ever started darting away, I would not hesitate to use one. Her safety is more important than what others think of me.

Yep! When you have a newborn plus a toddler who just learned how to run and doesn't get the whole safety/stay by mom concept yet, it's necessary!

I haven't used one, although they are very common in England. My reason for avoiding if possible is more to do with worrying that DS would become less consciously aware of whether he was behaving in a safe way. I don't understand the judging... why is it any different to confining the child in a shopping trolley or enforcing hand holding? (DS gets to choose to either hold my hand or be carried) In all these cases you are trading off a little freedom for the child's safety.

@sorrycharlie: I don't think I will ever resort to that. Then again, I am a very natural, homeopathic type of person, and I suspect other more nature-oriented women would be less open to this as well. I just would let my child sit in the cart if possible.

Fwiw I have used a scarf as a leash for my dog when I forgot the leash upstairs in my walk up apt.

A) in universal studios
B) in several airports
C) over the rim of the grand canyon ;),

We had one but we only used it once. For the most part, he was good about holding my hand (except in the parking lot leaving school). So far, DD stays with me pretty much at all times if I'm holding her hand.

I don't understand why others would judge. It's the scariest thing when your child runs off in a public place!!!

I haven't (yet), but we have one and I won't hesitate to use it if I have to. We bought it mainly for travel. J HATES to hold my hand when walking, and loves to wander off every which way. One of my biggest fears with him is that he's going to get hit by a car. So judgment from others or a dead/injured son? Yea I'll take the former any day!

I'm only 22 weeks pregnant now, so no experience as a parent, but I had one when I was little! I only remember because my parents divorced when I was two and my mom used the leash and my dad was horrified by it and never used one. This was the old school kind that had a rainbow wrist strap and a twisty red cord. I loved it! It gave me a little bit of freedom and independence so that I didn't have to be holding mom's hand all the time. And when I got older they became the handcuffs for games of cops and robbers. So I would definitely consider one if it would be useful for my kid. I see no problem with them, whatsoever!

I had to rig up a toddler leash from a scarf once. DS was on a tear at the playground and would not leave even though it was going on three hours, and I was about to pass out from hunger. The last drop was that of course he had to pee, so he peed himself rather than leave. I'm seven months pregnant and just can't carry a kicking screaming toddler several blocks. I felt like the worst mom ever, but I had to get him home somehow!

And then in the elevator he kept bawling to total strangers that he wants to go outside. Yeah. Mean mommy has been keeping him indoors :meh:

I have one (a monkey backpack) and have never used it except once. We were traveling and it was the first time we were going to go through the airport without a stroller and we were going to Vegas so the hotel walk areas are just so crowded and crazy. Turned out we didn't need it bc she was happy to hold our hand but I wouldn't hesitate to use it if she wandered away.
I have seen other people use a scarf or plastic ring attached to their stroller or purse and the child just learns to hold onto it when walking with an adult. The rings are helpful bc you can detach and attach easily so you could put it on a shopping cart
