I worked as a cashier at Target in college. It was not bad at all. Back then, Target owned Marshall Field's so you could use your discount there as well. It was 50% off at MF!!

I worked as a waitress in restaurant. The pay sucked since it was based on tips and some people totally screw you over. Then you have days where it's great! I just didn't enjoy dealing with customer compliants that weren't legit (aka they were looking for a free meal).

I've worked at The Gap and H&M in the past, both times I started during the holiday season for extra money and ended up staying on. I actually really loved working retail, helping people shop, getting discounted clothes. I would definitely work retail if I could make the same amount of money I make now, but that won't happen.

I worked at lululemon for the year between undergrad and grad school. I absolutely loved it!

I've often thought, since then, that if I could make a living doing what I did in retail I would happily go back to it. I'm happy though that I've now found a job that allows me to do all the things I loved while working in retail (namely, helping people, building relationships and providing a high level of customer service) that also pays the bills :)

I spent several years in retail management and loved it for the most part, but it's a stressful job! You constantly have to think about meeting sales plan, keeping irresponsible/sometimes evil employees in line, making sure the store looks great/is stocked/p.s. is your stock person on task in the back room?, selling credit cards or loyalty cards (depends on where you work), making sure displays and marketing are current, putting out fires at the register (because coupons are like rocket science for some folks), making sure the person who has been waiting by the fitting room gets let in, making sure the merchandise sitting by the door doesn't walk away, oh and BTW are people buying multiple items/spending over a certain amount per transaction? managers get ranked on that... Wait, did I love retail after all? :) I definitely learned to multi-task, I had killer calves from running around like a crazy person all day long in pumps, and my wardrobe was amazing, but I can't imagine doing it long-term (4 years was enough for me!).

I think a part-time retail job would be lots of fun, because I do love helping people, meeting new folks and doing visual stuff (would love to work on visuals at Anthro! dream come true).

I work 20 hours a week (part-time) at LL Bean in addition to my full-time office job. I think LL Bean is a better-than-average retail employer. Pay is not great but the people (for the most part) are, and the benefits are good if you qualify for them. I participate in their 401k which is very competitive, and though I don't qualify for health or dental I've heard they're very good.

It keeps me busy and brings in a little extra every week which is nice. That being said, I don't think I would work there (or retail in general) if I didn't need the money :)

In high school, I worked at a fabric store. Which was an okay job, the pay was just awful.

I worked for Victoria's Secret for 4 years through college. I really liked it. I worked at a very small store. We had a killer discount and got lots of free and greatly reduced merchandise. I liked the girls I worked with. It was a good job. I miss my 30% discount.... :(

I worked at Bath & Body Works when I first moved to Texas and I loved it! It was a smaller store not located in a mall. Everyone I worked with was so nice. We all got along so well. It closed down because the landlord raised the rent and Bath & Body Works didn't want to pay. They tried to say "we bring in the most revenue in this shopping center, you need us," and the landlord decided they didn't.

I worked in retail for several years. First at Old Navy, which I loved/hated--I loved my job (specifically the logistics part of it, I did that half the week), and I liked most of my coworkers, but the store was in a not-great area, and we had a ton of HORRIBLE customers. I quit because I was working 39 hours a week and was still considered "part-time" so they didn't have to give me health insurance.

After that DH and I both worked for a small, family-owned kitchenwares store in Philly, which I LOVED. There was almost no employee turn-over, so we'd all been there a while (some of the little old ladies who worked the sales floor had been there 20+ years). I didn't work on the floor, though., though we had so many neat products that I would have. The store has a website, and I first got online orders together and ready to be shipped, and then later I worked online customer support. DH worked in the garage. I miss it terribly; I'm still close with the store owner, and if I ever find myself in Philly again I know I have a job there.

Yes as a teenager I worked at a hardware store as a cashier, I then worked at a supermarket for 3 years.

I did not like it, people really talk down to you when you work as a cashier or floor clerk. But i got great shopping tips and discounts

I did through high school. I really liked it, as well, though I never thought of it as a grown-up job for some reason. I feel like once you're in the manager or owners position, you lose the fun and just become the complaint department.

I worked a holiday season at Williams Sonoma a few years ago. It was in addition to my FT job and I had a lot of fun! I loved chatting with everyone and helping them pick gifts. I spent all of my paychecks (which wasn't that much) on buying kitchen stuff! :-)

do you/did you like it?

For many years I held a part time retail job in addition to my full time office job and I LOVED it. I miss it a lot.
I love working with people and love shopping. I loved helping people shop, helping them find a good deal, get the perfect gift, etc. I even loved organizing the shelves and displays.
If I could actually make a living doing retail I think I would!

At my full time job I'm the Inside Sales manager for an architectural/engineering company and I love it, too. But sometimes I think these folks must think I'm crazy, I love to organize and have sales contests, skills I picked up from retail, haha, not everyone is as enthusiastic!
