I've only felt scared, like I was in personal danger once. I closing up at the store I worked and walked out to my car. I noticed that a custome(a younger guy) was parked in his car in the lot still. We had the buddy system, so I had another (girl) employee with me. When we went to leave, he started to pull out right after is. Thankfully the alarm to the store went off because I didn't lock up correctly. So we pulled back into spots and he pulled into a spot too. We went back in, reset the alarm and I accidentally locked my keys in my car so I could leave! The employee let me sit in her car while I called my mom to bring my spare and let her know the situation. When she got there, we pulled out, and he followed. My mom kept getting between my car and his. He was trying to swerve back and forth to try and get behind me. I jumped on the thruway and just booked it home. He stopped following my mom once he realized he lost me. My mom had my brother waiting outside the house in case he had managed to follow me. I told her if he would have been able get back to following me, I was going to drive to a police station nearby.

Shortly after moving to Chicago, I was waiting for the train to get to work early in the AM. It was an underground stop and there were only a handful of people there. I realized the guy sitting next to me had an erection hiding under his shirt. I spent the next few minutes pacing back and forth, waiting for the train with one eye in the creep from afar.

When I lived in a larger city, I was walking home one night and was being followed. I was too afraid to go to my empty apartment, so I went to my neighbor's who, luckily, were two guys. The man who was following me wouldn't leave the front of their apartment until they gave him some cigarettes. I realized (after the fact) that I was traded for some cigarettes.
Also, I was in a car going downhill in the mountains and the gas pedal got stuck. That was absolutely terrifying.

I used to have to break up fights and kick out people of the homeless shelter I worked out. Not physically break then up, but interrupt it and ask them to leave. I was never really worried for my safety, because if something had happened, other clients would have intervened. I did get more nervous the time I had to ask someone to leave and not come back with the six inch blade he had!

The only time with kids I've felt in danger was when I was joking with the kids around the lake. There were two homeless men, and one was screaming the whole way around. It made me nervous for sure. Then the other guy, the next time they passed me, said "He usually calms down about halfway around." Then I realized how dumb I was being. The guy was obviously mentally ill and his friend was just trying to help him out.

It did make me think I should take a self defense class, but I don't think that covers what to do while baby wearing, haha!

@yoursilverlining: oh no, this car waited for me on a side street, then did a y turn in front of me, right next to me so that we were going in the same direction and pulled over. Then they waited for me to walk by and then pulled up ahead of me to the next house. They did it again and again, very obviously not normal and I turned back around and headed back to an open park. They continued this, they did another y turn and now were on my side of the street pulling just ahead of me, stopping, waiting for me to walk ten feet and pulling ahead of me ten feet. When I got to the park I saw them driving around the park to meet me at the other side. I was truly terrified, when I didn't see them at the other exit of the park (when I got there) I ran like hell home and called the cops. It was very obvious and strange. It takes a lot to rile me. Don't worry, I doubt you scared anyone!

@Greentea: oh man, your story reminds me that last weekend I was killing some time and driving around a neighborhood downtown (only place LO will sleep is in the car) and I passed the same couple, walking with their baby in a stroller 3 times on different streets. I wonder if they assumed I was creeping on them. I guess from this thread a lot of people would! Eek :meh:

I worked in a rough area of Atlanta at a shelter - one night while leaving with my supervisor we were approached and threatened, but my supervisor's son (a police officer!) happened to pull up right then to collect his mom, so the guy ran off. I carried mace and we did the buddy system, so it was only one incident.

I also had a few incidents over the years at work - when you work in a prosecutor's office, you get lots of threats. One guy my investigator had to pull a gun on when we were out looking for a witness, and another that they canceled court and escorted to our cars because someone tried to come through security that didn't like us much are the incidents that come to mind.

Not from a person. I try not to be a moron in terms of personal safety, but at the same time I realize that random street crime is a lot more rare than people think (at least in my area). Any time I've ever been creeped out by a person I smile at them. I figure (most likely) they aren't even paying attention to me, they're just staring in my general direction while contemplating what to buy for dinner. So no harm in being nice. Or maybe they really are staring but for in innocuous reason, again-- might as well be polite. Worst case they were contemplating something unsavory, I've acknowledged that I'm aware they are looking at me. Nicely. Pretending you don't see someone/avoiding their glance just makes it look like you have no idea what is happening around you IMO.

I had a guy try to carjack me late at night, while driving through a sketchy neighborhood. I was stopped at a red light and he got out of a car that pulled up to it. He got about a foot from my car and went to pull a gun out of his pants. I said fuck this and floored it through the light.

I didn't even have a nice car, just a shitty 96 Saturn SL1 with a busted fender.

A couple of times. I was attacked on the street by a guy when I was living in Spain. About 6 months ago near my home, a man in a truck cut me off, stopped me, got out of his car, and approached me.

@BandDmommy: the guy could have been just interested in your car. DH drives an M5 and people check it out and talk to him about it all the time. I don't get it, because I'm not a car person, but a lot of people are.

Here I was, trying to sound all tough and I literally just got followed while walking DD. It was one of those late 90s crown victorias (old cop car style) but in that bright royal ford blue. They followed us through several streets and then I went into a large park and they circled the park. I ran home. I am still upset!

I was followed home once from a laundromat. thankfully my roommate was home and i screamed ahead to her to open the door for me and to call the police, which scared the man off. I was so grateful she was in the right place at that time, though i would've at least called out to her even if i knew she wasn't - it might've worked.

I have a dangerous job, lone working in some fairly scary areas, inhabited by some fairly scary people so I spend a significant amount of my time in actual danger.... but I rarely feel it. My scariest experience though was in a totally different job, when I was 19. I worked in a mobile phone shop and one day these two guys came into the shop, totally off their faces on something. They started yelling, saying they were robbing the place and to empty the till. My boss (the shop owner) was a bit of a character and he started yelling back at them saying he was going to phone the Police. Suddenly, one of them pulled a gun. I have no idea if it was real or not.... remember I'm in the UK and guns are just not a thing here - I've never seen one before or since. He was pointing it at my boss. My boss calmly said to me "Please phone the Police". At that, the guy turned and pointed the gun at me. I didn't know what to do! I picked up the receiver, dialed 999 and asked for the Police, all while he was stood there pointing the gun at me! Fortunately, calling his bluff worked and they ran out of the shop (they were picked up on the street a little while later - but there was no gun in their possession) but it was so, so scary.

Yes! I wrote about it on here before but I was with DH and LO's at the mall and some rough looking guys stole a phone in front of us. DH confronted them while I told mall security (they did nothing...it's a heavily gang populated area). And so they followed us saying they were going to shoot DH in the head...IN FRONT OF OUR KIDS! I was shaking. We hid out in a store until security could walk us to our car and the guys were arrested.

When I was driving with my best friend in high school (I was in the passenger seat, she was driving), a biker gang surrounded us in an intersection, totally stopping traffic, and a biker gal got off her bike and went to my friends' window and told us to get out so she could beat us into the ground. Apparently she didn't like something my friend did driving (though we don't know what it was). We never got out of the car and locked the doors and she ended up getting called away by one of the other bikers and he told her to leave us alone and they left. We were 16 and bawling our eyes out. Haha!

I’ve been lucky to not have been in a lot of truly dangerous situations. There have been plenty of times I’ve felt uncomfortable and I always listen to my spidey sense! You've got to listen to that little voice inside.

I have felt uncomfortable before with people being shifty around me/LO/my car, but wouldn’t say I felt “in danger” then....just uncomfortable. I dunno. I’ve also had several men offer to help me with groceries or bags when I was alone with LO and obviously had my arms full…so maybe that guy was actually thinking about being a gentlemen instead of a creeper. never know.

I live in an urban center, so a number of times. It's all in how you present and protect yourself. I was in a government building picking up lunch today. There was a belligerent man near where I was ordering. I felt a little nervous, but knew that it being a government building, the police/marshalls would handle him. He was escorted out by them within minutes.

Oh yes!!!!!!!!!!! Too many times to even delve into.

Sketchy people, sketchy places, traveling Mexico and Europe with just one other female, sketchy road trips, sketchy bars, drug dealers, I got followed a lot and flashed a lot in Europe, I've been assaulted and followed, treated to indecent exposure... and so much more.

I lived alone in a cabin on a river and had some times when I felt pretty afraid of some sketchy people, have lived places with scarey neighbors, have camped and traveled alone....

It is an awful feeling!

@BandDmommy: Yes. A man grabbed at me (reached out for my arm and tried to pull me elsewhere) when I was walking with my cousin in the city. I took him to the ground. I was a martial arts instructor at the time. Wrong girl, buddy.

If he was trying to car jack you, it was probably your kids that stopped him. If he saw them in the car it would have been too much work. Still, so scary!

@BandDmommy: So scary! Sometimes, I think you have to follow your gut when you have a sense that something is off.

Yes, in high school a guy followed me around a store and then out to my car. He then followed me as I went home. At first I thought it was a coincidence (at first I thought I was being paranoid, if I knew he was actually following me, I wouldn't have left the store) and made a few random turns but he made every one...this was before cell phones and it was late at night so I eventually went home and immediately told my dad who was still up. Thankfully, the guy drove away. It kinda freaked me out.
