We've travelled a lot, domestic and international, with our pack and play, carseat(s) and stroller. We've done a combo of luggage and gate checking. We always wrap or bag our items and haven't had any damage, though we do take our "travel" stroller instead of the bugaboo when traveling internationally.
Last international trip my DS was 3 and we used our kinderkot - we actually fit that in one of our luggage checked suitcases!

DS has flown many many times, and internationally too. We have flown with both the car seat (Britax Boulevard) and the Bjorn crib, both gate checked and luggage checked on different occasions.

We have sometimes wrapped the car seat in a big plastic bag that the airline gives us and it has been fine. I think the Bjorn case is probably sturdier than a regular PnP case, so it's just like a big suitcase. However, I always give the warning that you should definitely check to see if the PnP flies for free. We vacationed in Asia earlier this year and took the Bjorn crib. On the way, the airline let us check it for free. On the way back, the same airline wanted us to pay $150 to check it. We were finally able to negotiate carrying it on, and it fit in the luggage compartment, but it was also a huge plane. It definitely would not have fit in the luggage compartment of a smaller plane.

We've checked the Pack 'n' Play, gate-checked the stroller in its own bag (City Mini, so it comes with a bag for the stroller once you've removed the three wheels), and then used the car seat in the seat we bought for LO.

This generally works okay, it's just a bit of a juggling act before we check bags, and then queuing up at the gate to board when we have LO in the car seat, plus the stroller in its bag, plus all the other carry-on items. We manage (just).

We checked our car seat but bought a Brica car seat bag to protect it. The bag was a little scuffed up but the car seat was fine. I've also checked our pack 'n play (the Baby Bjorn travel crib, which comes with a travel bag) and that arrived in perfect condition. And checked our umbrella stroller in a travel bag and it was fine. We've never gate checked anything.

We gate checked our infant seat but haven't traveled with the convertible yet. We're flying in October and I'm curious about the carseat, too!

@looch: @Mrs. Yoyo: did you gate check or check with your luggage?

Flown about 8 times with carseat, 4 with stroller.
Carseat got damaged this time when we gate checked it.
It was in a bag, the bag got ripped and the carseat got dented.

Next time we travel we are going to buy an inexpensive carseat, just for travel.

I used covers, both of which had straps so that the stroller could be carried like a backpack and the car seat could be carried either like a backpack or with an over the shoulder strap. Our stroller came with the cover-- and that worked out really well. It held up with no damage. (Our stroller is the Uppababy G-Lite.) The car seat cover (by Jeep) worked in keeping the car seat from getting dirty and damaged, but it has holes in it now. I'd say it really only has another trip left in it. But it was a worthwhile purchase. I'll buy the same one when this wears out for future trips.

Did they get to your destination unharmed?

Did you wrap your car seat in anything to lessen any damage that may occur from being tossed around by luggage carriers?
