This is sort of how my parents raised us actually, without really realizing it was a "method." They made dinner and encouraged us to try anything that was new, but if we didn't like it or want it, that was okay. They never made special meals for us if we refused something, though. Dinner was always family time.

Anyway, I think it worked well. We all sort of eat everything, healthy foods as well as more indulgent things, mostly in moderation. Seems like a sound concept from my experience!

I am definitely for just continuing to offer kids fruits and veggies. Maybe they will eat, maybe they won't. My DD has always had fruits and veggies but as she gets older will often resist eating some. I don't make a fuss, I just keep offering. Broccoli used to be her favourite thing to eat, but these days sometimes she eats her broccoli and sometimes she doesn't.

I chalk up to part of being 2 years old haha.

I really loved the book 'fearless feeding' that emphasizes the exact same points. But I haven't read that one.

@TemperanceBrennan: I agree with you-I think people pathologize food and that can take away from enjoyment and even health, in the long run. This idea, as I understand it, is to instill good habits around food-enjoying it, bring relaxed around it, being open to new things, with the idea that health follows from that.

@blackbird: thanks for the recommendation! I remember being very interested in the food sections of Bringing Up Bebe.

I like these: http://itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com/top-ten/

I can't get away from food being nutritious and having certain critical building blocks for myself. But that's not something I feel is important to stress to my kid. Kids don't care that broccoli is good for them!

I notice a few of these concepts were in "French kids eat everything", too, which I read last year and really enjoyed.

I haven't heard of this book/website, but from what you posted, I like the concept.
I'm not on board (personally) with the gluten/dairy free concepts and want to instill diverse eating habits in my kids, so I think I might check out this book. I like the idea that the kids gets to chose how much to eat, and the parent gets to chose what/when to eat.

A friend introduced me to this author when I was pregnant, and I think it has helped us a lot in establishing our family attitudes around food and feeding our baby. I'm sure it'll be even more helpful as we transition into the picky toddler years!

http://itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com/

For me, I've zeroed in on a few key concepts:

-division of labor around food: parents decide what to serve and when, kids decide whether and how much they'll eat, no drama

-no value judgments, ”good” or ”bad” foods, or the people who eat them. I try not to say ”eat your broccoli, it's good for you!” instead I say ”yum yum, isn't broccoli so tasty, do you think it's good?” I've really had to get out of the mindset of thinking of foods in terms of nutrition, like oh that's protein, or oh too many carbs, and just focus on a positive experience around meals.

-the idea is to get kids in the habit of appreciating and being familiar with fruits and vegetables, and seeing them as a part of every meal, so no hiding vegetables in other foods or disguising them.

What do you think?
