@MrsDaredevil-- agreed! We talked to the dentist and it really won't impact teeth at all (unless they still using it when they are much older but that's a whole other issue.). And my 13 month old finds comfort at night in his binky. I see that he weaned himself from day use, and if he finds comfort-- I'm all for it! It helps sooth him and I think its a useful tool to have in the arsenal.

Toddler Girl still sleeps with hers at 2.5. She's always had a strong need to suck and it kept us sane when she was tiny. I have to admit that I'm afraid that if I take it away she'll stop napping. But I'm not super concerned at the moment, she doesn't sleep all night with it in, so I doubt it's messing her teeth up.

It's going by her third birthday though.

Wonder Baby only needs it sometimes, so I'm trying to slowly wean her off it. Her need to suck has never been as strong.

With both of my DDs at around 6 months we started keeping the pacifier in the crib only, they only got it for naps and night time. Then when they hit a year old we had DD #1 throw them away since she was a big girl and then with #2 we honestly couldn't find one so we told her they were lost.

The first night always seemed to be the worst, but after that night they got over it quickly.

Yes it does affect teeth development and can increase the chances of them needing orthodontic work in the future. we use an orthodontic pacifier which is supposed ot be better but I am hoping to wean my LO of it soon, she is 4 months. She has never really wanted the paci but I push it on her because I dont like her sucking her fingers and its the only way she can self soothe at day care, but she usually lets it fall out of her mouth after a minute unless she is very sleepy

@MamaMoose: I sucked my thumb until I was 12.... when a friend of a friend said something like remember when we were little and used to suck our thumbs? ... Yeah. I think my parents tried so hard to stop me so it became a game. I'll let my kid embarrass himself if he keeps up with it. I will not paci wean or thumb wean.
DH's parents paci-weaned him at 4 or 5 years old by making him wear the paci in public when they shopped at Walmart. he stopped as soon as they let him leave Walmart. LOL.

Our LO is only 11 weeks old so we're still using it for sleep times, but I would like to wean her off around 6 months or so as well. My SIL weaned her kids off at 2 by snipping the tip of the pacifier - apparently it no longer gives them the satisfaction of sucking so they naturally wean themselves off it. No idea if that's recommended but it worked for her!

No LO yet, but one of my 4 year old pre-k students came in today with a paci in her mouth. Other than the fact that the other kids kinda looked at her funny, I can imagine it will probably affect her teeth too.

@JustlikeHeaven: @MamaBehr: I don't have any kids, but I remember either reading or seeing on tv that you can trim the tip of the paci (a little each day so it isn't super obvious). Eventually it will stop having the sucking effect and they will lose interest. Never actually tried it, but I've heard it works!

@autumnlove: I'm secretly hoping my LO will stick with the pacifier rather than find a thumb/finger. I was a finger sucker and my mom thought it was awesome that I had weaned myself off the pacifier. Not so much. Despite my parents many many efforts I sucked my fingers until the THIRD GRADE. And I only stopped because I had to get a pallet expander due to damage from all the finger sucking!

DS mainly uses his for sleeping, but does have it throughout the day. i'm hoping he weans himself off of it, but if he's still using it by one year i'll probably start to wean him off of it. he's 4 months now. i used a pacifier until i was over 4 years old and it messed up my teeth so bad, definitely don't want the same for him

Our pediatrician recommended getting rid of the pacifier by 14 months. However I would rather get rid of it now (before 6 months) I just imagine it will be much easier?
Anyone have any pacifier weaning tactics? She really only uses it while falling asleep and when she wakes up in the middle of the night and cries a little I stick it back in and she goes back to sleep :-/.
