One of the major reasons we loved our house was the huge backyard so we waited until we were settled and the weather was nice to have the party. It was very informal and we had a BBQ. It was a open-house type party. I made lots of Halloween themed food. Mostly finger food, but plenty of it. I designed invites and we sent them out through Paperless Post. Lots of fun. It ended up being a fairly large party--maybe 35-40 people? I kept the french doors to the back patio open, so people flowed from the living room to the kitchen and dining area and out past the kitchen to the outside patio. I provided tons of food--all appetizerish foods but enough to make dinner. And I bought a few bottles of wine, but I knew all my friends would also bring drinks, and sure enough I ended up with a glut of various alcohols after the party. We moved in July and DS's birthday is in November. It was his first, so we had a big party and invited a million people (thanks to DH's family). Everyone was really curious about our house so we felt obligated to have a big party. For the food we had it catered by Wegman's - so some hot foods and cold platters.
