I ended up getting my tonsils removed to help with drainage. I think I've gotten two as an "adult"--once in high school and once in college. I caught them both before they got too bad, though. It hurt SO BAD and made me dizzy and sick to my stomach. I went to a walk in clinic and the doctor said it was very minor. That pain we not minor! Because my body was already out of wack, I wasn't responding to medication at all and they ended up needing to admit me to the hospital for 4 days to put me on iv meds. I wasn't able to work for nearly 2 weeks after going home because I had to give myself iv's twice a day, each one lasting nearly 3.5 hours. It was not an experience I wish to ever repeat! Got ear tubes and that slowed them down but I can still bet on getting at least one a year. They hurt, no wonder why babies get so crabby with them!
