I'm sure there are plenty that resolve on their own prior to medical assistance. My sister also had it full blown...so did one of my NICU nurses. So far on cycle day 19 both times, so I'm thinking it is hormonally related for me. I noticed the clogged duct and had flu-like symptoms within a couple of hours. After about 24 hours of rest, warm compresses, and massaging, nursing, and pumping like mad, I've felt much better. I'm formulating a plan this month so I can try to avoid it this time around. I've stopped pumping except for on work days (one day a week), but I'm going to start up again as I get closer to the target day. That was when I started setting an alarm. He is finally night weaned but it took me a while to have the courage to do it. Part of the reason was also bc I had an early dental appt that next morning so I pumped rather than nursed him ( more efficient) so wasn't able to work out a clogged duct. It felt sore later that day and by the next morning I was getting chills and then fever and felt like crap all day until my husband came home with my meds. it was horrible. Worse I've ever felt. Then it took a couple of days of hot compress to work out that clogged duct. My one boob was red and warm to the touch. I went that day to my OB and he gave me an antibiotic - said it was mastitis but it had been caught early so I'd probably get better quickly, and I did. However, I told a lactation consultant about it a couple weeks later and she said that she doubted I had it... I think I did though because I NEVER get fevers outside of the flu. I guess it was because I got engorged after ditching breast shells and not pumping enough. It wasn't pleasant, but I was so tired and messed up post partum that I chalked it up to baby. I didn't realize I was sick until a few days into when I realized I had a temperature. I survived. Not pleasant, but I've been sicker. I have also had many clogged ducts and mastitis is so much worse. I think the cause was a tank top that was too tight -- similar to wearing a wired bra. My sister also had mastitis. I think she was about 6 months PP. That's what I was told.
