@Mrs. Sunglasses: My understanding is that the higher the level of hormones your breast tissues are exposed to, the greater your chances of developing breast cancer. In addition to hormonal BC, these other things also result in "extra" hormone exposure: beginning menstruation at an early age, experiencing menopause at a late age, later age at first pregnancy, and not having children at all.

If I didn't have other risk factors, the concerns about hormonal BC wouldn't bother me. Paragard isn't perfect - I definitely noticed my period more than on a BC pill, but it was one manageable way to reduce my risk.

Good luck figuring it all out!

@Mrs. Bee: Ya I'm in the exact same situation. I personally didn't know about Paraguard. Obviously I know more people who loved Mirena then have issues with it. But still... it's scary.

@Mrs. Sunglasses: the reason i was leaning towards mirena instead of paragard is it makes your period and cramps a lot heavier. i still don't know what i'm going to do! mr. bee will probably get a vasectomy at some point? but not right now even though we are done....

@Mrs. Bee: whoa! that's pretty intense. In our case it would only be temporary seeing Marc wants to get a vasectomy. Maybe if I get this though, he might hold if off a little longer (I'm actually pretty sure)

@Mrs. Tricycle: I have a history of breast cancer. Didn't know hormones could affect that. My mom was diagnosed at 37 so I started mammograms at 27. (only had one once, seeing I had Mavi and now sienna and breastfeeding in between)

Before TTC, I had ParaGard for three years. It's an IUD like Minera, but it uses copper instead of hormones. I really liked it, though my periods were a little heavier on it than on the pill. We have a family history of early breast cancer, so it was important for me to find something that was hormone free.

I have 3 friends who have the Mirena and 2 of those 3 had issues where their partners could feel it and it was uncomfortable. They went back in and had it trimmed down and then were ok. Two did not get periods, one still did. One ended up having an issue with it getting dislodged and needed to have it removed.

I am trying to decided between the pill and Mirena. I'm also worried that because I never went into "labor" and am not sure if my cervix dilated, if it will be painful to insert. I'm going to discuss the pros and cons with my doctor at my six week follow up.

i'm considering getting the mirena but there are a lot of women on my local parenting listserv that had serious side effects with mirena. like it embedding in their uterus and needing surgery to remove it and lots of other complications. they said they would never recommend mirena to anyone.

i'm not sure what i'm going to do!

Like PPs, the only side effect I had was not having a period; it was great!

I've only had mine for about a month, and so far no side effects. I was crampy after insertion, and had some period like bleeding for a few days after but that's it. So far I love it!

I didn't have any issue with it while it was in.
I stopped having periods all together, which at the time, was great.
I didn't gain any weight with it.

I finally saw my doc today and everything looks good! Which means I can start running again and well... have sex. But seeing I'm not to keen on going back on the birth control pill (I gain too much weight on that thing and I'm in the process of losing weight) I asked for an alternative.

I heard so many people talk about how great Mirena is. So I asked him to prescribe it to me (which he did) I'm happy because my insurance covers 70% of the costs... but I was wondering if anyone with Mirena have had side effects? My doc said I shouldn't be gaining weight on it and I hope he's right, but just wanted to know if there's anything I should know before getting it.

Thanks!
