never seen this before. We have some of the highest rated municipal water (apparently they do major tap water taste testing competitions and we do very well) so I definitely try not to pay for water besides with my taxes. Even Nestle comes and takes ground water about 30 minutes from my house for their "spring" water. The only "bottled" water we have is the 4 L jugs/a few easier to carry bottles in our survival kits in our house/cars.

i... don't understand.

you're buying a pretty box of tap water, so they can give 20% of what you paid to charities. why not just not buy the box, drink tap water out of the tap, and give all of what you would have paid to the same charity?

@yoursilverlining: Maybe they don't have actual water and actual cups at hipster taco joints?

Hey, they could make their Detroit proceeds go to the bankrupt city of Detroit. Now that would be ironic.

@Mrs. Jacks: Well, the one place I've seen/had boxed water was a very hipster taco joint in LA, so I imagine drinking a box of water where the company gives 10% back trumps the fact that you're drinking Detroit water :p

It would be nice if the tap water fact got out - yes, tap water is safe! and tasty, too!

@Mrs. Jacks: @yoursilverlining: hahaaha if it's muni water then no beeping way am I paying money for it. I already pay for my tap water I don't need to then go pay someone else to put it in a box for me.

I hate buying bottled water regardless and prefer it from my fridge. When I go out I usually fill my ss bottle. DH buys it all the time for working out. I don't know why he can't just use our reusable bottles and fill that??

@yoursilverlining: accomplishes giving money to a company while you still drink city water (which you could have gotten for free out of the tap for no money and no environmental impact!) boggles my mind, especially since they say in the FAQ that it's local muni water. So if you are in Detroit, you are buying your city's own tap water. (I know you get it the implications... I wonder why everyone doesn't?)

@Mrs. Jacks: because people think bottled/boxed water is superior to tap, and people are also worried about plastics...so, boxed makes you feel good about yourself while actually not really impacting anything?

One of those "do-good-without-doing-much" things? At least they give to charity :)

I may be inclined to purchase it after some more research on the packaging materials. The idea of all the chemicals in plastic water bottles is a little scary which leads me to buy cases of pellegrino from Costco since it comes in glass bottles. If the boxed water didn't have a ton of nasty chemicals in the packaging I may considerate it. Seems a bit gimmicky though.

Heh heh, the boxed water IS tap water. It says so in their FAQs. I'll just save the box and put the tap water straight into my highly sustainable glass that I wash and put away for reuse!

One of our favorite taco places in LA sells boxed water, which was the first time (and last time) I'd seen it.

Honestly, it feels a bit gimmicky to me, although I understand the environmental points they are making and think its awesome how much the company gives back. So, I'm not sure why it feels gimmicky to me, but it does. It tasted like any water, better some some of the more bottom shelf bottled waters for sure (i.e., Aquafina, etc.).
