Update: I chose to wear a suit and it turns out I'm no Superman. I felt weird about changing in the bathroom (my suit pants are hemmed for heels and I can't wear heels at work), chances were one of my interviewers would walk in, so I changed in my car in a local parking lot. Classy. I must have looked hot and the interview room was hot so my interviewers immediately insisted that I take my jacket off. So all in all I'm not sure if I got "points" for wearing it or not but I tried.

I also definitely got shuffled around more because I was an internal candidate. Only half the people expected showed up to my interview and then I had two subsequent make up interviews with the other people.

Several coworkers saw me in my suit so I was "outed" as having applied for the promotion. That isn't feeling as awkward as I expected. The next day some women that hadn't seen me in my suit approached me and asked me to apply for the promotion. That made me feel really good.

I probably won't know the outcome until next week but I'm glad I tried for it. Thanks for the help ladies.

@Corduroy: "well, I just listened to Lean In on audible and figured what the hell"

That's actually awesome and I think you should - - kinda - - say that!

My once over manager is on our department talent team (hiring team) and she told me that they specifically look for people who want to take charge of their careers; rather than just letting your career happen and bobbing away where you are. I told her that I felt like I was at a point in my life last year where it was time to take charge of my career and be more purposeful about what I wanted and going for it and she told me to make that clear to my manager, just in those words. I later received a promotion, and I strongly believe it was in part tied to my statements about taking charge of my career path, just trying new things, etc.

I haven’t had an internal interview (I got an internal promotion without an interview), but I have interviewed a good handful of people for internally posted jobs to join our team. No one has ever come in a suit, although I think a suit is always nice! Everyone did dress up somewhat though; blazers, nicer clothes than might be worn on a daily basis.

In all cases we were given specific questions to ask by HR based on the internal assessment of HR and the hiring manager of the candidate. We also could ask additional questions of our own on top of those, but had to ask the HR-provided questions. The interviews typically lasted for at least an hour; and that would just be for our small team portion of the hiring process/interview process. There were multiple levels of interviews each time.

I would be ready with much of the typical stuff from external interviews: be ready with concrete examples that highlight your work, a project or issue that didn’t go well but where you could see how to rectify it in the future (i.e., shows learning process, humility, etc.), examples of collaboration/cross-collaboration, etc. Whatever is appropriate for your position. Basically, I would prepare in the same way I would for an external interview and if they don’t ask a lot of questions and it turns out to be a formality, no big deal.

Good luck!

I interviewed for an internal position at my current job, but it was a promotion in my department on the same team and I was already essentially doing the job at the time so my boss asked me if I was interested in taking it on officially. I dressed slightly nicer for the interview, but not much. It was very casual and pretty quick.

I personally don't think it's weird that you didn't tell your team or co-workers that you applied for another job. That's what I hate about applying to jobs internally. It's super awkward to have to tell your manager/co-workers that you are applying for another position since there's always a chance you may not get the job. This has actually kept me from applying to jobs internally at past companies I worked for. Your situation is different though since your boss recommended that you apply for this job so it sounds like you have a great shot at getting it, good luck!

Shortly after I posted the hiring manager offered to answer any of my questions. I came up with a couple questions about the role to ask and we ended up talking for an hour and a half. Coincidentally that's the length of the whole interview that I was worried about filling.

The manager told me he changed into a suit for his last internal interview so I think I have to do the same. Obviously it mattered to him. I don't really mind wearing a suit but that means everyone in the office will definitely know what I'm doing which makes me nervous.

I also learned it will be the standard HR interview questions. I'll brush up on my answers to those. Especially why I want the job because I don't think "well, I just listened to Lean In on audible and figured what the hell" is a good answer. Nor is "my boss told me to apply" both of which are true.

He also asked if my group or co-workers knew that I applied. I said I hadn't told them but figured they knew. I've been with the company less than a year and I'm not part of the in crowd gossip-wise yet. Is it weird that I didn't tell them?

I regularly interview internal candidates that I know well for promotions or new positions with more responsibility. I generally expect business attire from the interviewee, even when neither position calls for it on a daily basis. I've had candidates bring a change of clothes specifically for the hour they were interviewing and then change back into attire more appropriate for their current position to complete their day!

I generally am working with an HR approved list of questions, regardless of how well I know the candidate, so you may want to expect that. We have to ask each candidate the same questions and honestly I expect internal candidates to provide more detailed answers, and like it when they have clearly done their homework about the employer's larger goals.

I have done this, twice....once for truly a promotion (same role moving from senior to manager) and one for a new role (also a promotion - but a role that would be new).

Each time I met with 3 individuals - it depended on the personality of the interviewee how "real" the interview was. For some it was merely a conversation...what are my concerns about the role, why am I interested, what do I think I could add to it. For others, they treated it much the same as they would for a real interview.

In both cases, I basically stepped up my attire one notch - we are fairly casual business casual (if that makes sense) so I went a little nicer than my standard slacks, cami, cardi and did a blazer. Sounds like upping it from jeans to slacks could be enough for you.

I did prepare just like I would for an external interview. For me - that meant reading our 10K "cover to cover"; researching on LinkedIn the backgrounds of the people I'd be meeting with. I also tried to collect some internal presentations on their work and spoke to others who had worked for them.

FWIW - I got both positions.

@Alba4: I think it's a formality but I don't know which way it's going to go. My boss flat out told me the other internal candidates aren't getting the position. I'm not sure if I was supposed to read that as I have a good chance or I have no chance.

@Mrs. Toad: I'm concerned it will be like my external interview- which was totally useless. It's a really big company so the interviewees can only ask questions issued from HR (essentially phone screen questions). It was so hard to demonstrate technical knowledge or talk about my experience.

@looch: Dress would not be the norm here. People occasionally wear dresses but only when they have little work to do. We're more jeans and safety shoes. Two years ago business dress with tie was required daily. Nobody does that anymore though. I have been interviewing externally also within the industry and told at the last two others not to wear suits. Maybe I'll just ask my boss.

That is so awkward. I'm sorry. Hopefully it is just a formality in your case.

I did interview internally when I worked in publishing, but it was in a separate division. Luckily I got the job, so it wasn't too weird.

I have done an internal hire where we interviewed an internal and two external candidates. We gave the same questions to all of the candidates. I would agree with @looch: that you should prepare as if it is an external interview.

Yes, I have...I would prepare like it's external and then be nicely surprised when it's more casual.

As for what to wear, I wore suit separates to my last one, it was a pair of dark pants and a tweed blazer (winter). What about a dress, or is that totally out of your normal realm?

I interviewed for an internal position about four years ago. It was a little odd since the interviewers knew me already but we took the opportunity to talk a lot about what the new role would entail, what the day-to-day responsibilities would look like, how they would envision the transition to the new responsibilities would look like. I tried to ask thoughtful questions about those aspects since I already knew about the company/culture.

Good luck!

I have an interview for an internal position (promotion) next week. One of the interviewers is my direct boss. The other two sit on either side of me. They know how I work and I'm sure they've already sized me up.

I don't know how we'll fill 1.5 hours. What do I wear? I wore a suit when I interviewed for me current position but that seems silly. I usually wear jeans and a blouse so I'm hoping slacks and a blazer will cut it.

Any tips on questions that might be asked or questions to ask?
