He was 20 years old at the time and was the youngest child in a family with 8 kids. He was living with one of his brothers who found him the morning after it happened. He had set his alarm for the morning, but wasn't alive when it went off. The alarm sound that kept going off got the attention of my other brother-in-law. The family has never been the same. </p> https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/have-you-lost-any-friends-or-family-to-suicide-#post-190730 Thu, 14 Jun 2012 22:31:10 +0000 cyneswith 190730@https://boards.hellobee.com/ <p>One of my friends attempted it after getting kicked out of the Air Force for paralysis (caused by following an order from a stupid cadet - broke her back.)</p> <p>Two other friends considered it, as did I - one due to pain and physical weakness and hopelessness of a heart condition, and another due to cancer (in his brain, lungs, liver, etc), me due to a supposedly untreatable, ever-increasing, ever expanding seizure condition with cluster headaches, memory loss, violent-paranoid episodes, VERY frequent vomiting, rashes, steep IQ drop, etc. I told friend #1 about friend #2 when she was decided to commit suicide that day (she was in Germany and I was in the states). She said that if friend #2 could face his horrible cancer with such awesomeness, she could go one more day. She and I talked through "just one more day" for about 10 days, when someone FINALLY went "wait, you're going to let an Army wife's heart collapse because 'she doesn't need her left ventricle'?!?!? NO, I am doing this surgery myself. I will pay for it if the Army won't. We are getting you in in under two weeks." The surgery took place 4 1/2 months into "3-6 months to live". Then I told friend #2 (online, on a "you will whip cancer's ass" page for him) that he was the reason one of my best friends was still alive. He pulled me into the hall the next time I saw him (at work -he was still coming in between chemo sessions), his eyes misty, and he thanked me. He said he'd been considering suicide himself, due to the pain and the way the cancer was altering his personality, but knowing that his strength saved the life of a young mother and the wife of a soldier gave him the willpower to press on. When my own illness was to the point where I couldn't imagine facing another day, Friend #2's willpower kept me clinging to life, too. When Friend #2 died a few weeks later (due to the cancer, NOT suicide), it got harder, but Friend #1 talked me through "one more week" until I was out of the Army and got treatment. </p> https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/have-you-lost-any-friends-or-family-to-suicide-#post-190692 Thu, 14 Jun 2012 22:03:06 +0000 MsMini 190692@https://boards.hellobee.com/ <p>Unfortunately, yes, one of my cousins shot himself with a rifle when we were 12, and then my Dad's best friend (family friend), drugged, drank, and gassed himself in a garage almost 6 years ago. The worst is the aftermath, my Aunt found my cousin, and has been in and out of the hospital for psychiatric issues ever since. My uncle (mom's youngest brother) took his life 8 years ago this July. I still remember the phone call and collapsing to the floor when I found out. My cousins were 14 and 16 at the time. My husband had twin older brothers- one was straight with an uncontrollable temper, the other was gay. Once DH's gay brother came out his parents essentially disowned him (despite being such a good person), while fawning all over the idiot brother because he was straight :( .</p> <p>When DH and I met his parents were finally starting to tolerate his lifestyle, but his father was still largely unsupportive and hurtful. We spent so much time with him because DH was close to his brother and we got along so well. By 2010 he was in really bad shape medically (he had a host of health issues), was in a toxic relationship, and was being ignored by everyone in the family but us because of the relationship he was in.</p> <p>Three days after DH's 24th birthday we got a call from DH's grandmother asking if we had heard from the brother- we said no but that we'd check on him after work. DH's dad got the same call and after much nagging went right away. It turned out DH's brother killed himself a full day before because he felt that he was largely alone and that he would never be accepted by my IL's for who he actually was. My uncle committed suicide in 2003. I had talked to him the week before and he seemed perfectly fine. I also lost a schoolmate when I was in middle school. His best friend had committed suicide and then he followed.
