@Andrea: Same here. Maybe a brief period before I moved away from home for college and I didn't have a care in the world.

I wouldn't say it's less idealistic, it's more real. The older I get I realize what's really important: my family. In my early 20's I'd spend hours for various causes, and I'm not saying that's bad or meaningless, in any way. I'm just saying that a normal, everyday person can only do so much - our time and resources are limited. For me, it's better to focus that time and energy into what's truly important to me, my family. If I have time leftover, that's great, but I want to make sure that my priority is them and not the other way around.

When I was younger, I thought I was more indestructible. Now, I realize I'm not superwoman and no one else is either =)

@Minnie_Girl: Politics are one of the things that made me feel really pessimistic and negative the more I learned, so I had to quit being as involved as I once was.

Politically I'm much less idealistic. Follow the money!

In my personal life, I don't think I've changed much. But I'm young and could easily succumb to a gradual decline in standards. :P

Maybe it's not a loss of idealism so much as a changing or maturing of ideals.

I am in my 20s but I am much less idealistic than I was in college. In college I became extremely idealistic while finishing my minors in sociology and anthropology. I became super passionate about fighting racism and joined a couple anti racist groups on campus and in my city.

Now, I don't have time to think about anything other than taking care of my LO, putting food on the table, and making myself mildly presentable every day.

I think I'm more idealistic now (or I try to be). And I have learned to avoid engaging in activities and talking about subjects that make me feel like your friend who thinks his best years are behind him. I try to always frame my way of thinking in the "best is yet to come" kind of way. But, I'm also in my 20s...lol. So maybe that is just part of my age.

Way more idealistic when I was younger. But I became very realistic very fast after graduating from school. I like it better this way...less room for disappointment. Probably sounds jaded but I believe i am the best version of myself today!

I was talking to a friend who is in his mid-30s, and he was lamenting that he's not as idealistic as he was when he was younger. He said that he's noticed a similar pattern among his peer group... then paused for a moment and said something provocative:

"We are our best version of ourselves in our twenties."

Another friend said something similar just last week. He said that when he started his first company after college, he was focused on changing the world! Now he just wants to support his family.

Nothing wrong with that! But it's definitely a bit less idealistic than when he wanted to change the world for everyone...

What do you think: were you more idealistic when you were younger? Do you still have your idealism for the world at large, or are you more focused on your own family now?
