We tried. I expect our home owners & car insurance to go up due to cost of living increase, but ours jumped drastically and we never had an accident or claim. To put this in perspective, we bought our home five years ago & our rate was $389/yr. Last year, it increased (again) to $799. That's insane!

I called and tried to have to rate lowered, and was told it had increased due to the large amount of claims that had been made in our general area. We had lots of snow & hail storms.

I understand, to a degree. We did have bad weather. But for our premium to jump $400 in four years and we never once had a claim.....

We switched companies & are back down to paying $399:year!

I was able to do it on car insurance when I called. They dug around for additional discounts and had recently added some new program discounts that we were eligible for. I also did a lot of research and got quotes elsewhere for around $5o less/mo. I called because I wanted to stay with our current provider for longevity reasons and I've liked their service thus far. I'm now paying $10 more than I was before but I added another brand new car to the coverage, so it was a good move!

You could get a quote from a different company and if it's lower you could threaten to leave unless they lower your premium? We have State Farm and just got a quote from Geico for almost $100/month less for car insurance. I'm not even going to bother asking SF to lower it because I can't imagine they'd come down that low, but if I really wanted to stay with SF I'd use it as leverage.

@sunny: we called our two separate insurance companies and both of us got small discounts for our jobs (military/airline pilots). I'm sure it isn't the only career field out there conducive to car insurance discounts.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: So you can't really "negotiate" per-se. You can only hunt for different discounts I guess. Good to know, thanks!

People ask me to reduce their clients' premiums all the time, but sadly it cannot be done "just because."

There are discounts you may be missing out on or coverage options that may be tweeted to lower your rate. The best thing you can do for yourself is shop your policies online, with agencies both exclusive like State Farm (one policy to sell) or independent that have several carriers and policies.

Do you pay your premiums in full or have them swept from youraaccount? If not, those are two discounts that will not change your coverage, but may lower your premium.

ETA: insurance is regulated by the state, so laws may differ, but in my state it's illegal to offer the same risk different rates. Meaning if me and you have the same credit, same zip, same cars, same bday, same coverage and all the other things that go into a rate then we must get the same rate. If I offer a discount to you then I must make that same opportunity available to another person that qualifies for it.

Have you ever negotiated your car or home insurance premiums?

Is it possible to even do this? (e.g. same coverage/same company/same everything, lower premium). I thought that premiums were determined by actuarial formulas so the only way you could lower your rate was via some change to your coverage (e.g. changing your deductible) so I don't know if they can change the premium because you threaten to change insurers.

I was thinking of trying to see if State Farm would look for more discounts for me but I feel kind of dumb asking for a "discount double check". I might email my agent to ask. :-P
