I'm curious- why does this bother so many people? I'm genuinely curious. You take your kids in public, strangers see them, it's legal to photograph other people, and children, in a public space, there are advertisements, both print and TV, with children in them everywhere. Why does your child being seen in a photo worry you more than your child been seen walking down the street? Maybe I'm an idiot (and in full disclosure I've let my daughter's face grace billboards and magazines globally), but do you really think from a photo of their smiling face, someone will find out more info about your child than they can if they really want to anyway? It seems to me, that in this digital age, this overly-saturated age of advertising, and photos of people everywhere, it doesn't present an added risk.

When we did daycare I did not give permission. I don't like people knowing where my kids go to daycare and I don't like their picture being out in a public place for anyone to do with it what they please. Never noticed any negative repercussions but wouldn't really care if people think it's annoying or whatever.

@MoonMoon: I did hear from a school staff member, also in charge of the school's marketing and blog, that it makes her job really difficult because there are only a handful of kids in the entire school whose parents have said no, and she's constantly trying to be careful to exclude them from class photos. I am surprised so many on here say no, considering most of LO1's school (Pre-K through 8th) say yes.

We've always said yes and do now that we have a kindergarten kiddo too. I post pictures of my girls on Facebook and Instagram so I'm generally okay with my kids being on social media.

Thanks for all the responses. I think we'll go with the gut instinct of not giving permission to use images of DS.

By negative repercussions, I meant more subtle social things, like LO getting left out, parents being perceived as difficult/antisocial etc. Now I realize I'm probably imagining things, since it seems the majority of parents feel similarly!

We've always said no (basically every time we need to update our forms, so three times now). No repercussions. I think ours is really only to not use her face on promotional stuff, aka the website. I have no idea about individual teachers posting to their own facebook pages since I'm not facebook friends with any of them. I hope that doesn't happen.

We allow it because they only post to their private FB page and at the end of each year all the pictures are deleted and parents are unfriended. I actually love seeing when they post pics of LO as we don't get photos any other way. Most photos don't show the full face either.
The school also has a strict policy of no reposting photos or posting any of your personal photos and you can't take any at the school.

Our daycare doesn't post pics of kids on social media. We said it's ok to take pictures of him, but not ok to use him in ads. I don't have any idea what kind of negative repercussions there could be.

I've okayed it for school community purposes only. They have an internal Flickr account with password that they send to parents. I like seeing what they're up via the photos. I wouldn't want LO on the website or in advertisements though.

@travelingnanny: i specifically asked the daycare director about staff personal pages. She says thats an absolute no-no. Only time will tell as I friend the teachers.

Even if you can't completely shield your LO it doesn't hurt to do as much as you can. The fact daycare has a policy and a photo release form means they know a person's likeness is not a free for all.

We allow pics for internal use only, but no posting/publishing in places that are meant for distribution outside the school community. Could the internal pics get reposted elsewhere? Sure, we recognize it and would prefer people not do that but you can't police everything. But we felt like this was the right bance for us. No negative repercussions.

I wouldn't and wouldn't care about saying no. To me there is no need for those pictures to be on those type of outlets. For a parent-only newsletter I would probably be okay with it. (I think). Preschools and daycares used to get by just fine without splashing pictures of kids all over the web. I understand that times have changed now, but I still think it's a bit much. I want to preserve my child's privacy as best I can.

@travelingnanny: I notice more and more parents taking pictures during classes etc. About 50% of the time they're reminded if the place has a no photo policy (like YMCA swim classes) but it's becoming more common...

My bosses agreed to posting pictures on their private photo page.

Honestly it is so hard to fully keep your child off social media. Other preschool parents will take pictures and post them. People in public take pictures without asking and I'm sure they get posted too. An example- we were at story time and at the end they bring out toys for the babies to play with. A mom took out her phone and snapped a few pictures of her kid playing with my nanny kid. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make a big fuss out of it.

Sadly, I don't think in this day and age it is possible to be 100% off social media.

Yes, they do post pictures of kids on social media but never their full faces. Our daycare also has an app (Precioustatus) and we authorized pictures on there as well. I like getting the photo updates of certain things she's doing in the day.

I think we've discussed this topic in the past, I'd love to get your current thoughts on this.

Have you authorized your daycare or preschool to share pictures of your kid on social media? We have to fill out an authorization form for LO, who's 3 and starting preschool in August. My first instinct is to say no- neither my husband nor I really post his pictures online. But then I think, will that create weirdness or will the school think negatively? Will LO be left out? Do you think it's harmful for a school to put kids on social media or nbd?
