I'm in NY and unfortunately there is no exemption for breastfeeding. I just had to fill out my return card and I will be breastfeeding two kids in about a month when DS2 is born. I'm worried I'll get called :-/

You can claim an exemption for having a young child that needs care. My husband was even able to do it and no questions were asked.

Wow! I got an easy exemption while lactating. I'm pretty sure it was a box to check on the form. (California)

Not a nursing mom (yet) but I am a litigator. I haven't had a juror who was nursing but it wouldn't really bother me personally (i.e. I wouldn't not pick you because of that). Most of the courthouses I work in have lots of extra rooms someone could pump in (jury rooms, witness rooms, deposition rooms, people's offices etc) and judges and their staff are generally incredibly nice. Also, we regularly take breaks during a trial regardless. Like, every 2 hours at least. So I don't imagine it will be a problem to accommodate, definitely just let them know what you need!

I let them know when I got there, and they found a room for me to pump in. The case was a pretty gruesome murder trial and I ended up getting dismissed anyhow because I said I wasn't emotionally up to sitting on a case like that only 3 months postpartum!

My state has a breast feeding exemption. I had to request it twice. It was a bit of a pain to do, but it got me out of it while pumping.

I was called for jury duty and I sent back the card saying I was a nursing mother and they said I didn't have to report. I'm surprised they're making you go. I would think the judge wouldn't pick you for a trial if you say you're breastfeeding, but if you don't mind being picked. I'm sure they'll allow you accommodations for pumping.

All the breastfeeding mamas in my group were released by the judge. They will ask you if there are any reason you won't be able to serve and will take that into consideration.

I'm Canadian so I'm not sure if it's the same - but I was excused when I told the judge I was nursing a baby and because I was a stay at home mom, I didn't have child care for the duration of the trial (it was expected to be long).

I actually called ahead and asked what accommodations were available for pumping and was told that there weren't any and I should just claim an exemption even though it didn't really fit the category. I re-asked and repeated what I thought I was hearing and was told yes, just claim an exemption. I asked which one and was told it didn't matter. So I picked "had a kid that I couldn't leave unattended" and when I faxed in my exemption letter I stated the real reason and what I was told to do and when I called and what that persons name was. I never received a response but I was exempted for that time. With all of that said, I'd suggest calling ahead to see what you'd be dealing with and maybe you'll get the same answer I got.

I did. I told the women when I checked in that I'd need a place to pump and what times. When it was time they let me use a side room. I didn't get called and was part of the group dismissed early; I don't know if that's the reason why.

I did. I raised my hand when they asked if anyone had a conflict and had to go up and talk to the judge. I told her I was breasfeeding and could serve, but I would need time and a space to pump. It didn't get me out of jury duty and I got selected. They had me pump in the break room of the judge's offices and asked me to just let the bailiff know when I needed a break.

i've never had jury duty, but if you absolute need to pump, then i say you gotta do what you gotta do. I would let them know in advance and ask about a location to do it.

I haven't, but I'd be so tempted to take my pump out in the jury pool room and just start doing it while they are selecting jurors-- pretty much ensure they wouldn't pick you :)

I might have jury duty next week. I tried postponing it until the summer but my request was denied.

Have you pumped during jury duty? Should I just let them know when I check in?
