I'm a second grade teacher and my second grade girls LOVE them. They're perfect for 1st and 2nd graders independently or for younger children to read at home with their parents. I have never personally read one from beginning to end, but I've skimmed them and hear about the story lines (they're all somewhat similar) when reading with the students. One positive thing is that there SO many of them, which can help hook children onto them and keep them reading.

I read an article a while ago about some of the best chapter books for kids. It was actually a list for girls, but it could go for boys and girls. The first set of chapter books on the list was the Rainbow Magic books. I had never heard of them. We downloaded a few audio books and the narrator's voice makes my eye twitch. I would much rather read them than listen to them....but they have a good story and no "bad" words (like stupid or jerk).
