This makes me sick.....it's so tragic and could happen to anyone! I don't even know what window guards are...but I'll look into them now.

That is so scary! My lo is still young be we need to! Just this weekend it was on the news a little boy in my region was injured falling through a screen without a window guard. Ugh makes me sick to think of how scary that would be!

@hilsy85: Thankfully this house has central air, so that's not an issue for us right now!

@mrbee: ah true...are you worried about the spaces next to the ac? Actually, how do you even put in a window unit if you have the guards in?!

@meredithNYC: @hilsy85: Yah me too, and there are often guards installed on the windows. But then when you install an a/c it can be hard to secure the window safely!

@hilsy85: Yeah, that was my understanding, too. Every apartment I have lived in here has required me to sign off on paperwork stating that window guards are installed if there is a child under 10 living in the home.

@hilsy85: I don't know if the three year old lived in NYC or not... the guy who posted it just said that his friend had recently lost his three-year-old son.

So tragic!

I thought it was mandatory to have child gates/child proofed windows in NYC if there's a child under 10 living there...? Our building doesn't have the gates, but the windows only open out a few inches, so a child couldn't fit between.

Bee mentioned that someone posted to her local mailing list that their friend lost their three year old recently... he pushed through a screen on a third-story window, and fell forward out the window and feel to his death. :( I can't even imagine... I am not sure I would survive that experience.

Thankfully we live in a basement/first floor duplex, so Charlie can't really fall out of a window. But there's a winding staircase between the two floors, and I am constantly obsessively checking the baby-proof gate at the top of the stairs to make sure Charlie or Olive can't get past it!

Do you have a second floor to your home, or live in a building in a higher floor? Have you had a chance to secure your windows with child-proof window guards or other techniques?
