When I saw the Japanese baby so frustrated to tears because she couldn't solve her little toy stacker problem, I was like whaaaat?? No way!! Now that I have a baby, I watch that scene and I think....oh yah, that's totally my daughter. She got so irked trying to learn how to suck her thumb, among other things!

I watched it on netflix right after DD was born & I kept tearing up! It's different and it took me about 20 minutes to really sit back & be able to enjoy it, but I ended up liking it.

I saw it, so CUTE! The American couple made me roll my eyes. The Japanese baby was adorable and as a former teacher in Japan it made me wonder what other people thought about that part of the story? The Mongolian baby and the African baby were by far the most interesting. I wish they'd make Babies Part II!

I loved it. I've seen it twice, I think I'll watch it again on my day off tomorrow. I wasn't too interested in the American baby--although one of my favorite scenes was when Hattie (American baby) was in a class with her dad and they group was singing some sort of kumbaya song and Hattie went running to the door. I think it was all a little too hippie for her :)

@Mrs. Marbles: I never heard the term helicopter parent before. I'm afraid we have tendencies! The funniest scenes and eyeopening were when things would 'go wrong' in the American parenting though they were the most protective. I thought it was interesting that the link provided said that the African mom thought the Mongolian baby was the happiest one.

@Mrs. Marbles: That's what I loved about it most... it was like a course in comparative anthropology!

It really challenged the way I think about child rearing... I realized I was more like the San Francisco couple than I wanted to admit.

I love it and have watched it probably about 4 times! Once in the theater and a few times with family members who hadn't seen it yet and it's on Netflix so why not? It portrays such a huge contrast in child rearing all over the world!

I was so excited about this movie when it first came out... and was completely disappointed. Perhaps I just watched it to late, but it really was just not gripping. The African was the only one I found interesting, so I guess you could say I enjoyed 1/4 of the movie.

What a wonderful picture it is! Here is the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vupEpNjCuY

The filmmaker follows around four women and their babies (from around the globe!) for a year. There's no talking head interviews or anything... it took me a while to get used to it, but I found it such a powerful approach. I read somewhere that they treated the babies like they were wildlife, and filmed them accordingly. So clever!

Anyway, I just came across this interview where someone interviewed the parents about what they (and their grown up babies!) thought of the film. If you enjoyed the documentary, then you will get a kick out of the interview!
