We have one for our dog. He listens pretty well except when it comes to coming when called. It's really a safety issue to protect him. We rarely ever have to shock him, and its never on a high setting. DH and I have both felt the shock and its more of a startle than pain. He gets SO excited when we put the collar on him so I know it doesn't bother him. It's really the only way he can be outside without a leash or his tie down. We know some people who are so against them, but they have poorly behaved dogs, so there's that...

We have a wireless fence collar as well as a training collar. Both shock her, but both of them also have warning beeps, so for the fence collar if she gets too close to the edge it beeps and she backs up. If she were to keep going it would give her a quick shock. She learned her boundaries really quickly and now she doesnt even need the collar to stay in the yard. We liked it so much we bought the training one because she was digging. It has a remote and if you want her to stop, or do whatever, you beep it. If she doesnt stop you can shock her. DH has been shocked by the yard one and I tried the training collar, it isnt bad at all and there are diffrent levels depending on your dog size.

I strongly recommend both of them. We used the training one to stop digging, leash train and several tricks. I can't remember the last time we had to shock her. After maybe 3 or 4 times she learned what the beep ment and was good to go!

I haven't, but read a lot about it b/c I'm curious about all things dog training.

I like Leerburg's approach, and he has a lot about the topic on his website. Check it out! What @Cole describes sounds like his philosophy, and you wouldn't give a stim unless you know the dog knows the command. This differs from a lot of others approaches where the collar is used to teach, not reinforce, the command.

We've still use our e- collar on our doggy. We mostly use and he responds to the beep by coming to us or the door. Our remote comes w a tick shock which is good rather than the continuous shock. He's experienced both though and he responds to both very well.

My dog is totally my baby but I had to get one for her. We only put it on when people come over and she knows to behave when she has it on. We usually only "beep" it, we've only shocked her about three times in her life.

I am really curious about this topic too. We bought one to help us train our dog, the biggest thing we wanted it for is when we hike, he is awesome 95% of the time but his biggest issue is coming the first time when we call him and while sometimes it is just annoying it has the potential to be dangerous while hiking.

Right now we are just trying to get the dog acclimated to the collar and to have him associate it positively. We put it on when we are going places (he LOVES going anywhere-- even the vet) and praise/treat him. I have to say, he doesn't love the thing, it is a bit bulky and the collar is unwieldy. I want to find a different collar to put the device part on but I haven't had much luck at this point.

Our plan is to issue a verbal command, wait a brief moment, issue a warning sound, wait a brief moment and then shock. That might change as we go but from what we have read it looks like a decent place to start. I want to make sure that we don't undermine our verbal commands since he won't have the collar on all of the time.

I totally get your hesitancy about the controversial nature of the training collar, it is such a tricky topic with people having very strong opinions. I felt guilty for weeks (ok, even now) about buying a prong collar. I struggle with the idea that people will think we are mean for having one but my dog is not even remotely fearful of it, we use it very sparingly and truthfully it doesn't hurt, it is more uncomfortable than anything-- and what's more, he gets to go to lots of places because his behavior is usually impeccable and ultimately that makes him a happier dog. Goodness, this can be tricky!

I never used an shock-collar but my parents train dogs in their spare time and use one all the time. They very rarely use it any higher than the lowest setting, and for the most part it has proven to be very effective. They needed it when the started training for Hunt Tests, which requires the dogs to run far away and then listen to commands (and, you know, come back!) and it was very helpful.
I think my parents zap when the dogs don't listen to the command, like they need the immediate punishment (though punishment isn't the right word, because it the lowest setting is a buzz not a shock). I also know my mom never used a setting higher than she was willing to feel, so that she had an idea what it was like. And, don't use it if the dog is wet, that would hurt like crazy!

@Lindsay05: Thanks for your response! Our dog is a hound mix and follows his nose like crazy. I'm so glad to hear it worked for you! Did you zap her when she crossed a certain boundary? Or didn't respond to your command?

We have both a remote collar and an underground fence for our Beagle. She was very high energy and is a scent hound so she would wander off frequently so it was our only chance. She has only ever gotten zapped by both once because it taught her very fast where her boundaries are. Both have a 'beep' to warn before it zaps so the most she will ever push it to is the beep. Even is she hears the beep she will put her tail down and get off of her trail. We had no choice otherwise she would be wolf food.

I know this may be controversial, and I totally understand if there are some here who would never consider this method. I'm just looking for advice from those who actually have.

We are completely in love with our dog, but he is a "free spirit" and despite our diligence with positive training techniques we've learned in obedience classes, he just does not listen to us if he doesn't want to. We are about to move in with my parents who have a lot of property, and he needs to learn to obey us and to come when called, for his own safety.

We just ordered the Dogtra IQ and we'd like any tips on training him with it!
