@bluestriped bee: traveling 4-5 hours is my limit with our kids. they're great travelers, but anything more than that is too much for me :P
we're planning on waiting until our DS is at least 5 before we fly internationally (to Europe or Asia)

@bluestriped bee: I'm a big fan of traveling internationally with DS (and commented earlier in the thread about our travel when he was closer to your LOs' travel age), so I say go for it! I have no experience with twins, or traveling with two for that matter, but generally we found 7 months-ish to be a great age to travel. We think the time difference to Europe is actually a plus - if you're not set on adjusting them to the time zone, all it means is they'll go to bed late (around when you go to bed), and maybe even wake up later in the morning!

Yes, but we haven’t done a major time zone change with her. She already wakes up at the crack of dawn as it is, so messing with her sleep at this stage is not something we want to do. It’s been all Western Hemisphere for us. She’ll be going to her 4th foreign country next month.

Bump! We just found out my French cousin is getting married next July! DH and I have been wanting to go to Europe and this might be a good opportunity. The twins will be 7 months ish. Just plans for now. We'll see if we are still sane and alive about 6 months before the wedding.

We are actually visiting home (NYC) from Hong Kong. Our LO is 7 months and he's doing as well as a baby can with a long flight and complete time change. I don't have him on his usual schedule and he's tired all the time. So we let him sleep whenever he wants and he's doing alright. I'm totally tired though, I'll let you know how he adjust when we go back to HK!

I flew 10+ hrs alone with lo when she was 10 months and we were fine. I think it would depend on how long youre planning to stay in Italy. We stayed for a month so the long flight and jet lag adjustment was worth it but if we were to go to italy for shorter than a week, I might reconsider.

We flew internationally when DD was 7-8 months old. It was tough, especially since she was on meds and needed to be lathered in lotion constantly back then. But she fit into the cubby they have for lap infants. However, she didn't sleep much in it. I basically had to hold her the entire time (a little tricky while you're trying to eat, hehe).

But I have a feeling that will be nothing compared to how she'd travel now. She no longer naps on me and when she cries, there's no soothing her sometimes. I feel bad for whoever is sitting near us this Feb! But it's a short flight filled with babies, so she won't be the only one crying. *fingers crossed*

Yes, but for us it is a necessary task as. Our families are not on the same continent.

Jet lag is tough, it is taking my son about 4 days to adjust over 6 time zones.

Not yet but hopefully next year. We just flew for the first time with DD (3 mo) two weeks ago. She didn't sleep at all, and I spent the entire flight dreading a meltdown. Luckily, it was a short flight! I'm just hoping she will start napping besides on a walk before we attempt an international flight!

I travelled solo with her to the UK when she was 6 months, then DH and I took her to Spain and then England when she was 9 months. I kept her on our time zone as much as I could and it helped so much! That was easy in Spain as dinner etc happens later anyway. It was harder in England though but I was so grateful I'd done it when we got back to Canada as she was hardly jet lagged at all. Our biggest struggles were the heat of Spain - even coming from a boiling Canadian summer she really struggled. Also family were all over her and mostly she just wanted her mama. I would absolutely go to Italy! Food will be easy, transit is great, cou.

I flew to Korea alone w/ a 9 month old - that flight was actually a piece of cake. She slept quite a bit on the flight. The trip itself was also pretty easy since she napped in the ergo everywhere we went

Traveling is getting harder and harder now that she's older. (22 months). We recently took a 6 hour flight (3 hour time change) and it was soooo challenging. She didn't cry or anything, but it was def a challenge keeping her occupied. Also, sightseeing / going out was immensely difficult as she refused to nap in her stroller so we had to be at the hotel for each nap. I told my husband I don't want to travel again for a looooong time!

We just did 2 weeks ago!!! LO was 7 months old and we went to Barbados. Two 3.5 hr flights with a connection in Miami. The flight down was really easy because we went early early; flight home was total hell because it was late and we were stuck in immigration/passport control/customs with a SCREAMING BANSHEE of a child (although we got bumped to the front of every line.....). It was really nice because we didn't have to plan meals around her naps since we had a kitchen to make stuff at home.

@chopsuey: went to Ireland and Italy when LO was 8/9 months. The return journey was definitely a bit tougher as it is longer and during the day and the adjustment back tok a little longer but overall it was great.
I definitely recommend it, take advantage of the opportunity!! Although LO won't remember it, you will, and you'll have great pics of your little traveller when he gets older!

@chopsuey: I considered it when my husband went to Italy for work, too. In the end I decided it wouldn't be as enjoyable with an infant (Chloe was 6 months old, I think??). I imagined long days and lots of travel, and the selfish part of me didn't want to take a break in our day for naps.

We are dying to go and plan to travel internationally once our kids are older and can enjoy the trip.

We've flown several times internationally with LO. We flew from tokyo to Hawaii when she was 4 months old. It was super easy because I was breastfeeding and she slept through a lot of the flight. We flew from tokyo to hongkong and from hongkong to Beijing when she was 10 months old. It wasn't so bad. She still couldn't walk but she liked to stand by our legs. We took pouches and snacks to keep her occupied.

Our most stressful flight so far was Beijing to Chicago when she was 15 months old. She was walking and she still had a short attention span so movies and cartoons didn't really keep her occupied. She also had a hard time sleeping. On the way back I had to do the flight with her alone because DH had to return a couple weeks before us. The younger they are, the easier it is to fly.

Yes, we went to Italy when DS was 5 months old and London and Ireland when he was 10 months old. It was much easier than I had expected actually - he adjusted very well to the new time zones (we just had to be a little more patient in the evening and accept that he went to bed quite late the first few nights), was decent on the flights and loved seeing all the new things and people (in Italy especially they doted on him - such a baby-friendly place). We're planning a trip to Istanbul in the Spring.

I think the biggest challenge was probably the long flights back during the day (the overnight flights there were much easier), but so worth it! I think you should go for it if you have the opportunity, Italy was such a fun place to bring DS.

Many times! DS's first US to Europe trip was at 7 months. Since then, we have gone back and forth a few times. This past spring we did a Europe to Asia trip when DS was 28 months. (We now live in Europe). I think the hardest thing is the jetlag. All of the other variables are just details. Your kid could do great or have a total meltdown depending on circumstances. We are definitely planning on more international travel in the coming year and now we have a newborn to add to the mix. I think you just have to decide you want to do it and keep expectations low.

Yes. I would probably, but be really scared of the jetlag again! But I hear it's easier to go East than West for the LOs to adjust to the time change, so I'm tempted to do Asia or Australia. And I wouldn't go for a less than a week and half or two weeks. It took K 8 days to adjust going there. But only ~ 2 days to adjust getting home.
