When we visit my DH's family, UHT/shelf-stable is pretty much the only milk anyone uses. Some places sell refrigerated milk but it's really not popular. I think the UHT stuff is gross but DH loves it, and DD didn't see to notice any difference from her usual milk. I never thought of bringing powdered milk...but my problem with UHT (besides the taste) is mainly how processed it is, and powdered milk doesn't really seem much better in that respect. What is your objection to the UHT? Is it that it's been sitting for awhile (which shouldn't matter as long as it hasn't passed the expiration date)? Or that the kids might not like it?

@Mrs. Bee: We've used Carnation Breakfast essentials in a crunch when traveling abroad. It's very light to carry in powder form. Even when mixed with water, and it has more calories and vitamins than skim milk, and it has 5g of protein vs 8 g protein for milk, so for us was a good alternative. I've been able to find it abroad.

I would be very very careful about using raw milk, especially in third world countries where you may not have easy access to medications or clinics for treating Listeria or Salmonella. The shelf stable milk is ultrapasteurized and much safer than raw milk IMO, but does need to be refrigerated or consumed immediately once opened.

3 year old DD used to drink pediaSure as a nutritional supplement....it was pretty common to find it in powdered form wherever we travelled in Asia (in the US it's pretty much liquid only). I tried the vanilla and thought it was good, but it tastes more like almond milk than fresh dairy.

I was actually surprised to see Goats Milk Formula for Toddlers at the store. It was kinda expensive though.

@Mrs. Bee: Nido Fortificada is a great WHOLE powdered milk - most powdered milk in the US is skim milk. They make Nido Kinder for a toddler formula type milk beverage. We used Enfagrow Toddler formula for 6 weeks (good coupon deal) while DS transitioned to cow's milk and he did great on it, but had he not been ready for fresh milk, we would have stayed on Nido Kinder for a while. The macronutrients between the two are almost identical.

@Mrs. Bee: Try a powdered milk / formula called 'Nido' - it is sometimes in the foreign foods aisle of the supermarket. It was recommended to us by a nutritionist when we were having some eating issues with our LO. It is a lot like carnation milk but without all the sugar.

I find I can drink powdered milk only if it is ice cold.

i am almost certain my kid would reject it, so I would try it at home before you go through the effort of packing it.

@Mrs. Bee: I spent a summer in zimbabwe where we used powdered milk. Even on cereal, I didn't taste a difference. I never drank it alone, though. You should buy some now and test on the kiddos without telling them!

I grew up on UHT milk (I grew up in the South Pacific). It doesn't taste great, but I can't say I ever tried powdered milk to compare it with. We did do a lot of carnation instant breakfast and chocolate milk, which helps the flavor.

We add whole milk powder to whole milk to increase calories, but ice also used it on its own when I was out of milk. It tastes great! My step-dad pretty much only drank powdered milk growing up...

The brand we buy is Peak...through Amazin.

I have LO toddler formula for a bit after she turned 1 and wouldn't drink cow's milk. She liked it, but she was formula-fed, so I assume she was used to the formula flavor.

Could you mix those carnation instead breakfast things with water, instead of milk? (I have no idea!!)

The only milk available in El Nido is shelf stable, and it's been sitting in the hot humid weather. I was thinking of taking powdered milk or powdered toddler formula with us. Maybe we can get raw cow's milk at some point?

The kids don't eat well when we travel, and milk is an easy way for them to get nutrients.

Have you ever tried it?
