I have curly hair so I do a decent job on DD1's curls. We never take much off, just about an inch at the bottom every 3-6 months. DS has super straight hair and it shows every scissor mark. It's tough even for professionals to get to look good. He also has trouble not reacting to the clippers close to his ears. Just cut it dry, then you'll get it the right length. I should have mentioned with my previous comment that I did the Deva cut dry.
