One Valentines day I was running the hostess station and of course we were overflowing and had a huge wait (like an hour and a half or something ridiculous). A lot of families go out to dinner on Valentines day - like huge parties - and there was this little boy that was about 8 or so that made me cry. I had a complete breakdown; it was horrible. He was a brat LOL Another time I called an old man 'sir' and he reamed me a new one! I was like what the hell am I supposed to call you?! I loved the food discount/sometimes free food but customers could be kind of evil. Can't think of any one anecdote in particular! We worked it ALL through high school. It was early mornings (I had to be there by 6, I think) but I was out by 2. The owners were the nicest people in the world. Most of our customers were local people coming in with their families for breakfast, so I knew a lot of them. They were usually pretty nice. In college I was a hostess at Cracker Barrel and I hated it. The waitresses were so mean, and the customers were so rude and impatient. I got free food every shift :) Ususally people were nice but I had one guy who worked at a kiosk in the mall come over and get "ice ice ice water" everyday meaning a cup of ice with a teensy bit of water. The first time I made it for him I went to put the lid on it, and he grabbed my wrist and growled "I said ICE.ICE.ICE. water" ...apparently I only made ice ice water. I had another customer call me stupid one time. Other than that, everyone was usually nice. The nicer you are to them, the nicer people are! I got to drive around the golf course all day. It was an awesome job. We also would host events there, great money for not hard work. I made a crapload of money and it was awesome! I was able to save for school and not have to work during the year at all. I quickly learned that old people tend to be cheap when it comes to tipping :P I totally agree that everyone should work in the industry, though. Some people were total jerks. I really liked the old folks though the job was pretty intense. Then I worked as a waitress in a steak house. The job was fairly easy but there was a surprising amount of grumpy people who went out to dinner and even though most people were nice, the grumps would really ruin the day. I ended working there cooking and waitressing on weekends/summers until I was 21. It was a small business and we all became family. I could always come home for a weekend during college and make a bunch of money waitressing. It was the best job ever. I still think that it was one of my formative work experiences. I learned to give people bad news (no - you're table isn't ready and won't be for another hour) with a smile and I learned to be exceptionally organized in a very busy and demanding situation. It has helped me in my professional career immensely. I was a "phone girl" which basically means I answered the phones and took orders. People were mostly pretty nice to me actually. They were so full of themselves, would hit on every girl in the place, just really annoying. One time the ringleader was ordering tacos, and I asked "soft or hard?" referring to the shell. He goes "What do you think baby?" and grabs his crotch and starts thrusting at me. I didn't even have time to think, but what came out was "Oh ok! I can have some teeny tiny mini tacos made especially for you." Silence. Heh. I think everyone, regardless of income, should have to work either a food service or retail job for at least 6 months. I always hear people talk about how dirty and gross fast food restaurants are, but the one I worked at was clean! I had no problem eating there, I never saw anything gross. But the customers, yes.
