@Mrs. M: I accidentally recycled a math tests my kids took. I felt really bad, so I brought them brownies when I made them re-take it. Oops.

Not my own kids, but once one of my 1st grade students saw some art work in the recycling box. I always kept a lot of the cute art work they made me, but it got the the point where I had to get rid of some of it! I felt so bad and from then on only recycled after school. Luckily the child's response was "I think you accidentally recycled this Mrs. M'" and then put it back on my desk.

I got caught once by the kids I nanny for and they were bewildered by it too. I did later that day fess up that sometimes we create art for the joy of making it and sometimes we love the final product but that it's ok to recycle the ones we don't love. Thankfully that became part of our clean up from art projects-- keep or recycle. They even caught on that some could be keep for a few days type of thing which made life soooo much easier. Frankly though, a lot still went into the trash later but they knew we at least were valuing their time and energy at the time.

Yes, we throw it away together because we take high res photos of all artwork to create photo books! We do the same with his lego creations, etc.

My LO is only 18 months, so he doesn't remember what he's created (plus, of course, the trash can is the BEST.PLACE.EVER. so he'd probably be honored if he found it there.) But even now, I'd still like to keep some of his scribbles ;) I found an app called Artkive that I think I'll download and use for storing photos, so I can toss the "real thing." When he's old enough, I think I'll let him choose what gets uploaded and then let him pick very special pictures for the fridge/walls/etc.

Yes. I was corrected that he made that for me!!! So I kept it another week and then threw it away when he wasn't around and I was taking out the trash.

No because I feel too bad! However, we have so many that I know I need to get rid of some but don't have the heart to do so yet.

I really hate keeping extra stuff... even when I was a kid I would sort through my art and throw out the stuff I didn't think was that good. I was never a hoarder lol.

So hopefully my kid is like that too :P but if not I'll do my best to make sure she never sees her artwork in the trash. Maybe I'll even take it directly to the outside trash bin.

I've kept almost everything, but i do get rid of the paper scraps and the papers with stickers on them. No need to keep those, so i pick them up and put them in a big trash bag the night we put the garbage out, so he doesn't see it in the bin, because he fishes it right back out too.

Not yet. I saw a great idea on Pinterest, take pics of their art with your phone and then make them into a photo book. I hate keeping paper around!

One of my mom friends posted about this recently on Facebook. Never put artwork in the trash unless it is very well buried! :silly:

Our son is super into arts and crafts, and makes so many projects... it is impossible to keep them all!

The other day he was so confused when he noticed one of his drawings in the trash. "What is this doing in the trash, Daddy? It must've fallen in there!"

I agreed with him and we fished it out together. I try really hard to be honest with him, but I think he's not yet ready for the truth that we throw away some (most?) of his art. The great stuff though, we put on our walls!
