My son is only 6 months so not dealing with this, but I had lice all the time as a kid. After trying all the medicated remedies, my mom found the most effective treatment was to smother my hair/scalp in cheap conditioner, cover it in a shower cap for a couple of hours at least but over night was the best, and then comb out the bugs (dead by that point) and the eggs. She used to take great satisfaction in crushing the eggs between her fingernails! One thing that saved us a ton on electricity and water was finding out you don't have to wash all bedding every day unless your kid naps more than every 4 hours - bugs and eggs die after 4 hours without a blood meal so anything in bedding will die between wakeup and bedtime.

We're not at this age yet, but I got lice all the freaking time as a kid! My mom was a teacher and seemed to forever be getting it from her students and passing it to us, and sometimes vice versa. I could probably be a lice specialist at this point. If you're thorough it's not too bad to get rid of - time consuming, yes, but not too difficult. Most people's mistake is not being thorough enough with the eggs (I love the robi comb that @cole mentioned) or not washing enough stuff in their house afterwards - if it's fabric, you need to wash it. If you can't wash it, it needs to be bagged up (like airtight garbage bags) and put away until anything on it would be dead.

The kids I nannied for got it and it was pretty miserable. I was super worried because I was/am pregnant and found the robi comb at CVS. It is a little electrified comb that helps detect and kill lice. If there were tons it wouldn't be super efficient but it's nice to have on hand for checks after those notices go home. The amazon reviews are largely positive and at $30 it was worth it to me to not need to worry about using those shampoos while pregnant.

When I was in sixth grade, our school had a really bad live infestation and we had head checks every week. So far at Daycare, we haven't had any lice issues but I imagine it's only a matter of time.

Our kids haven't gotten lice (yet?!), but we've gotten plenty of lice notices when other kids in the school had lice. We used to check the kids' hair constantly, but have eased off a bit.

A friend told us their nightmare experience with lice though, and how their whole family got lice and couldn't get rid of it. Eventually they hired a lice specialist to remove the lice from everyone's hair, and then washed all the clothes and sheets that they owned. After hearing her story, I'll probably spotcheck the kids' hair during bathtime again!
