@LemonJack: if it makes you feel better we are going to be trading in our 2016 Nissan Versa with <50k miles for a minivan and keeping our 2006 CRV with 100k miles. We need to keep one AWD can that can haul/contain our 2 medium sized dogs and so the CRV will stay. It does hurt to trade in the newer one though! At least your Prius is very fuel efficient, you’ll have a better gas bill with your plan!

@LemonJack: we just got rid of our rav to get a minivan. I was sad to lose our rav, especially because it wasn’t that old, but now that we’re going to have 3 ages 4 and under the minivan is just so much easier. You won’t regret it.

Thanks for the input everyone. We probably will be keeping the Prius. I’m not thrilled to be keeping an older car, but we probably put no more than 5K miles on it a year, so hopefully it’ll be okay for the next few years. I do most of the driving with the kids, and all of our family driving will be with the minivan (currently it’s with our rav4), so the kids will just be squished in the Prius during morning drop off.

@Mrs. Champagne: @catgirl: Yeah, I wish I’d realized three across weren’t feasible in the RAV when we purchased it, but we weren’t even thinking about it then. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with her in a small booster. She’s 5, but very small for her age.

We haven’t looked much into the logistics of putting a third row seat in, but had heard about it from people who had done it.

@misolee: Great point. She’d only be riding it in for a short time in the morning to go to school, but it would be a mess for her to have to climb over the seats to get out in the drop off line. We are literally two blocks from school, so when she’s bigger, she can just walk. Unfortunately with the timing of when I need to get to work (I’m a teacher and start before she’s able to be dropped off), my husband has to take her before he does the daycare drop off. Ugh!

@Mrs. Champagne: Even with a booster, three across is not allowed in the rav4. It had a severe seat belt overlap from 2006 (or 2008?) until 2018. Starting in 2013 they even put in the manual that the driver rear side and the center seat cannot be used at the same time.

My friend fit a small booster in her rav with three across. Is a booster an option?

Not really sure how you plan on adding a third row to your rav4 - just looked it up and it sounds expensive and questionable at best. Even if you can successfully add it, it will be a very small space. I doubt you could fit a rear facing seat back there. And since it won't have tether anchors, a forward facing seat wouldn't be safe. But you definitely can't fit three across the second row in a rav4.

The 2007 prius also likely has overlapping seat belts but it may be possible with very slim seats to fit three across.

Not sure about Rav 4 but just another thing to think about with a SUV and having the oldest in the back... basically she will have to climb over the seats every time or go through the trunk. With two other carseats, the seats won't fold.

We used to have Highlander and switched it for a van bc it only had two latches in the front on the sides. With two carseats, it couldn't fold. My oldest would have had to climb through each time.

I don’t have a rav4 but I have a mazda5 where the third row is basically in the trunk ... I can barely fit a folded city mini behind it. My oldest sits in the back in a booster and I can’t imagine trying to do her straps back there. On the flip side 3 across is usually easier without a booster since a tight fit makes it really hard to access the seat belt every trip. So based on that I’d probably keep the Prius assuming you can get 3 across.

We are expecting our third and need to get a new vehicle. We’re planning on getting a van, but aren’t sure which vehicle to replace. We own a Prius and a RAV4. The Prius can fit three across, although it would be tight and we’d have to buy narrow seats. The big negative with this is that our Prius is a 2007. It still runs great and only has a little over 100K miles because it’s not driven a ton, but I’d hate to have problems with it before we feel we can replace it without stretching ourselves too much. My husband drives it to and from work and that’s about it. He would be driving our kids to school/daycare in the morning, but otherwise we’d use the van almost exclusively when driving the kids around.

Our other vehicle is a rav4. It’s newer than the Prius and has about the same amount of miles on it. It can’t fit three across though, so we would have to buy a third row seat, and our oldest would sit there. This is what we originally planned, so they wouldn’t be so squished together in the back. I’m concerned about safety with the seat so far back though (basically in the trunk). My oldest would mostly just be riding it it to school, which isn’t very far and is on city streets, but I’m sure there might be occasions where she’d have to ride in there. She won’t be in a booster for a few years, so we’re looking at having three car seats for awhile.

Has anyone added a third row to a rav4? I’m thinking we’d probably wait three years to replace whichever vehicle we keep, so even though it’s “temporary”, it’s not like it’s a one year thing.
