@bluestriped bee: not the answer to your original question, but to baptize in the Catholic Church you need at least one Catholic godparent who is in "good standing" with the church (goes to mass, confirmed, not divorced, though some churches are a lot more lenient than others). The other godparent can be a "Christian witness" from another christian faith. Technically they should not be baptized catholic but unconfirmed (as by choosing not to be confirmed they chose not to fully participate in the religion) but our church didn't care about the confirmation. I had to dig into that a little when we were choosing godparents for C.

I think the term godparent can be nebulous. I don't see anything wrong with choosing someone to take on the title "godparent" even if you don't mean it to be a strictly religious term. I do think @Truth Bombs: makes a good point though. You want to make sure the people you choose understand your intentions. Especially because godparent may have a traditional meaning to some people and you wouldn't want there to be confusion. We use the term Fairy Godmother among my close group of friends (all nonreligious) to mean honorary aunties to each other's kids. It's just a fun little thing but the sentiment is there - that we're important people in the lives of each other.

@mrbee: I think it's totally fine to name someone to have a special role in your child's life but I think you have to be really sure that person will actually take on that role. My husband has one of his mom's sisters as a godmother and one of his dad's brothers as a godfather. My husband is not at all closer to this aunt and uncle than any of his other aunts and uncles, and none of them played a spiritual role in his life, so I just don't see the point. I just think if you are going to go to the trouble of naming a godparent it shouldn't just be for the sake of honoring that person. There should be a defined hope for the relationship that the godparent understands and is on board for.

@Truth Bombs: @lawbee11: My mom's family is Shinto/Buddhist, so it wasn't about religious guidance but about creating a special connection between godfather and child. I always felt especially close to my godfather/uncle and wrote him letters as a kid, and when I visited Japan I would spend extra time with him. It was a nice connection!

@Truth Bombs: Agreed.

If you're not expecting this person to guide your children religiously/spiritually then I don't see the point. We're not religious so our LO doesn't have godparents. IMO you don't need a title in order to be involved in a child's life.

@Truth Bombs: This is mainly coming from the DH. He had god parents that were pretty much a second parent to him. Like a friend of the family that has a title important that ranks up there near family relatives. I can ask the DH about his reasoning and his description of what he wants our children's god parents to be.

As for me, I have god parents but I haven't seen them since I was a child. I don't even think my parents know where they live now.

ETA: Also, the spiritual part of it is kinda off the table because DH and I have our own religion, so finding a god parent who is either Catholic or Lutheran might be tricky. (Though maybe DH doesn't care and baptizing catholic might be okay with him... we did get married in a catholic church.) Though when we do end up baptizing them with whatever religion we can agree on, we would like the god parents to be there for the ceremony. Like I would prefer to baptize our children Catholic but our god parents don't necessarily have to be catholic. (Though maybe the catholic church might require one parent to be Catholic. Haven't thought that far yet.) I think DH and I both can agree that we want some sort of Christian background for our LOs. But I'm also open to having god parents that aren't religious. It's sort of our way of having our options open but not crossing out potential couples just because they don't follow a religion.

@Truth Bombs: yeah I am confused by it too.

My cousin has triplets and each one has 2 godparents. Each kid is an individual, so why would they share? The godparents are each supposed to guide each kid in their spiritual life.

I guess I'm not really sure why you need godparents then. If they aren't the guardian and they aren't playing a religious role then what role do you expect them to play? That would probably determine how many you need and who you choose.

Our religion doesn't have godparents so we just didn't name any. My husband's sister apparently expected to be the godmother and was bent out of shape but I'm not going to name a godparent just for the hell of it. Especially when she's alread my child's aunt... they have a relation ship already. And she and her husband aren't the baby's guardians either.

If you had god parents for your twin LOs, how many did you have. Did each twin have their own god parents or did you have one god parent for both (twins).

Right now god parents is just a title. Not really for spiritual guidance (they don't have to be religious) and not really for guardianship, if something were to happen to us.
