We still do this and he's almost 3 years old! We stay in his bed until he falls asleep and then we sneak out. We actually really love this time we have with him (talking about our day, singing songs, cuddling/holding hands). But anyway, I know a few of my friends who have tried the gradual elimination method where they first start off on the bed, then they'll lay down on the floor next to the bed, then sit by the door, then sit outside the door, etc. Takes a lot of patience but maybe that might work?

We had this problem (minus the barfing) and we started by teaching him "wait/be right back" as a sign and a phrase (index finger in the air). Then when I was putting him in bed, I'd say "I forgot something! Be right back." And I'd leave and wait outside for a few minutes or until he started to grumble. Eventually this led to putting him down and waiting outside and answering the inevitable "mama? papa? mama?" until he'd fall asleep. And now, months later, he just goes to bed and hardly ever makes sure we're still outside.

When LO was less than a year old, we'd put him down for the night and occasionally he would cry. Sometimes he would cry so hard that he would puke and then we'd have to go through the whole routine of changing him, changing the sheets, sometimes a bath if it was really bad. So to avoid this, I would sometimes stay in his room until he fell asleep.

Fast forward many months - we moved into a new home and to help him transition, we would still stay in his room while he fell asleep.

We have now been in the new house for 5 months and it has gotten to the point where DH and I no longer have our nights. :( We put LO to bed around 7:30 or 8 and sometimes he doesn't fall asleep until 8:30...by which time we are tired and fall asleep ourselves only to wake up at 10:30pm and move to our room.

Anyone have any pointers or tips on how to get LO to sleep on his own? (He is usually fine falling asleep with minimal crying for his daytime nap. Also, he still pukes when he cries too hard)

Any help would be appreciated!
