@T.H.O.U.: Do you mean Rudy? If so, I'm definitely intrigued in terms of "who" he will become and who he will become in regard to Liesel. Death has dropped a few hints that he will become significant.
1. In the chapter Growing Up a Saumensch, death writes, "When she came to write her story, she would wonder exactly when the books and the words started to mean not just something, but everything. " What do you think this means to Liesel? How can this quote apply to your own life?
I agree with @T.H.O.U. It is amazing to reflect on such little actions that have changed the courses of people's lives.

2. 100 Percent Pure German Sweat: What were your thoughts about the book burning in celebration of Hitler's birthday? I had always heard and read of book burnings but I thought the author painted a (morbidly and horrifically) beautiful lively picture of one and I felt like i was transported right there to the town square. I love when words have that power.
3. What are your thoughts about the narrator Death? Does death as a narrator work for you? Why or why not? I definitely thought it was weird at first, but I really like the levity and also the foreshadowing. It makes me want to keep turning the page. It is such an interesting way to tell the story.

For lack of time I'm going to just respond to number 3- at first I thought it was going to bed depressing /morbid to have death as a narrator but actually s/he actually adds some levity! I love the little pointed asides! I'm curious to see as the plot unfolds how this choice of narrator affects the story.

1) For Liesel obviously she would have never connected that picking up that first black book would make such an impact on her life (such as the connection to her Papa). I think its true that a lot of times in life we don't realize that while we are "in the moment" that these are the moments that will define us.

2) This part really made me sad. I have visited Dachau and its a very eerie place. I wonder if there is any significance in the book to link or metaphor of the book burning to the end of Liesels connection with Hitler. In the past we read that she had dreams about him but at this point she moves on.

3) At first in the prologue I was confused and just not sure how I liked it. As I move forward in the book I think it will be a great addition because during this times, death was such a constant underlying part of everyday life.

1. In the chapter Growing Up a Saumensch, death writes, "When she came to write her story, she would wonder exactly when the books and the words started to mean not just something, but everything. " What do you think this means to Liesel? How can this quote apply to your own life?

I think it means that when you can describe your life and your feelings you can really own them and understand them. The process of examining things in a way that allows you to write really makes you sort things out in your mind. Sort of like that quote about the unexamined life not being worth living. And I agree. I often find that in talking through a problem with someone else (which is often done online!) I realize exactly how I feel in a way I couldn't when I just thought of it internally.

2. 100 Percent Pure German Sweat: What were your thoughts about the book burning in celebration of Hitler's birthday?

Limiting access to ANY books/teachings/philosophies is always going to be a big indicator of a society doomed. Honestly it sort of reminds me of the moral majority-folks trying to ban books in school libraries. Forcing one point of view is never good for society.

3. What are your thoughts about the narrator Death? Does death as a narrator work for you? Why or why not?

I liked it. It was weird at first, but a different and interesting perspective. Sort of a perfect narrator because he seems more honest and unbiased than a character narrator would be.

It's finally here! What we've all been so very excited to discuss. I promised I'd keep the questions broad so that everyone will be able to participate!! Here are a few questions I thought of while reading that I thought would spur a good discussion. These are broad questions through Part 2, or page 123, or 22%/location 1464 on Kindle!

1. In the chapter Growing Up a Saumensch, death writes, "When she came to write her story, she would wonder exactly when the books and the words started to mean not just something, but everything. " What do you think this means to Liesel? How can this quote apply to your own life?

2. 100 Percent Pure German Sweat: What were your thoughts about the book burning in celebration of Hitler's birthday?

3. What are your thoughts about the narrator Death? Does death as a narrator work for you? Why or why not?

1. Wow, when I first read this, I had to look up for a moment. And read it a few times more. For some reason, I found this lyrical, and it touched me. Books have always been such an important part of my life. They take me to new places, have provided healing when I'm sad, and are always there for me no question asked. Majoring in English Literature allowed me the opportunity to gain an even deeper understanding about books. I guess I never thought about it, however books are our life story. At least they can be if we let them in. So, I found this quote to be telling of something powerful and mighty to come to our dear book thief, which is obvious from the title, but you know what I mean!

2. Books have been burned throughout so many points of our history, and it always makes me cringe at the thought of losing an important link to an era, someone's thoughts, or the truth. Sadly, I saw the burning as a metaphor to the concentration camps. I lived in Germany for 3 years, and we visited Munich. It gave me chills then, and reading this passage gave me chills now.

3. I was really interested to see how death as a narrator would play out. I'm happy to report I find him (I envision death as a he for some reason) is absolutely beautiful. He reminds me of a forlorn poet. The way he describes death as colors is very unique. Although, death in itself is unique when you think about it...

**For next week, let's read to page 239, 42% or Location 2755 on Kindle. That will take us through Part 4.
