I was disappointed that the "old vs new" remained the main theme through the whole book, like PP said it got a bit annoying and obvious. For me, it didn't hold enough meaning to be the main theme but it came out that way. I also wish the relationships between the characters would have evolved a bit more because in the end there's so much emphasis on friendship (which interests me way more as a theme for a story) but I guess the way the story is written (first person) makes it more difficult to really develop the other characters?
That being said, once Clay started his own research and started breaking the code, I really wanted to know the ending and couldn't stop reading!

@TemperanceBrennan: I agree - the characters were flat and the themes were very obvious and overplayed.

Sometimes I like books like that though - gives me a break from too much thinking. Haha

How did you feel when Clay "broke" the code? Was it what you expected?

It was a bit of a let down for me. I realize it wasn't a sci-fi/fantasy book, so there probably wouldn't actually be the secret to immortality, but I was at least expecting something a bit more interesting and puzzling. I kinda feel like the author lost his sizzle, and kind of half-assed the ending of the book. Like, he had this great idea for a story, but didn't know how to finish it.

What did you think of the book?

All in all, it was a pretty good book. I would still recommend it. It was an easy read, and pretty entertaining. I got very wrapped up in the last few chapters as they were solving it

I enjoyed reading it, but it wasn't my favorite book. It was a clever plot line and as a typographic nerd, I love the key to the code.

I thought it was a nice book and expected some sort of "message" to be the answer to the code. (Not that people would actually come back to life). I didn't pinpoint that friendship was the answer, but wasn't surprised by it.

I got annoyed at how obvious (and constantly) the author compared the old to the new. I thought all of the supporting characters were a bit flat and one dimensional.

I liked how there wasn't some big conflict between Kat and Clay and how their relationship just kind of fizzled. It seemed more realistic.

I think the epilogue is a double edged sword. I like to find out what happened to the characters, but it seemed a bit too "happily ever after" to me.

Sorry that this is late!! I skipped a week and brought a new baby home instead :)

How did you feel when Clay "broke" the code? Was it what you expected?

It wasn't what I expected. I didn't really know what to expect actually. I really got sucked in again when Clay started making progress in breaking the code. I really loved Gerritszoon's message and what it said about the value of true friendship.

What did you think of the book?
I loved it!! It was the first book in a long time that I've started and been immediately sucked in. I finished it in just a few sittings. I really liked the character development and the way that so many different personalities were able to interact and bring their individual strengths into their project.
