Good news, the baby had a nice heartbeat of 128 and "everything looks totally fine". PHEW. What a rollercoaster. Of course we are not in the clear but at least I know that babe has a good start!
Thanks everyone for your support. It was enormously encouraging at a very stressful time for me.

@Pollywog: There is one other practice but they are not nearly as reputable. I might go early with this one and my hospital (Glens Falls) doesn't have a good NICU. the other "big city" hospital has an awesome NICU and are much better equipped to deal with preemies. Their C rate is also much higher and they are "all business". Logically, I should switch but I don't want to :-(@
beatrixkiddo: see above.. and... update...
UPDATE- so my numbers went up to 28,000! AND the nurse was like "What you had been reading, yes, the OB did confirm that... HCG will plateau then even decrease.' Um YEAH!!! . I felt quite vindicated. I'm not 100% in the clear (lost previous baby at 8.5w and we all know it ain't over til it's over...) So it was my regular OB who has some goddamn knowledge about HCG.
I am still seriously considering a switch.... I don't know what to do about staying with this practice...

Hopefully u/s tomorrow will be ok!

@pachamama: I agree that it's probably time to switch. I went through a similar set of worries with R. I loved my hospital, but didn't love the practice. They constantly dismissed my fears of rapid labor. I switched to a different practice and it was night and day. I had much better care and all of my concerns that my first OB dismissed were taken seriously by my new practice.

Are there any other practices that deliver at that hospital? If not, what are the other hospitals like? I ended up at a much lower ranked hospital and had a great experience, Given your birth with R was relatively uncomplicated (right?), I wouldn't worry that much about where you deliver. I have found I got great one on one care at my major university hospital and my tiny community hospital. The nurses were fantastic at both. The only difference is that my midwives/OBs were much more in tune with me with R than with J and the NICU team was much more communicative with R (despite being a lower ranked NICU).

I am so happy I switched. I'm sure you will be too. After your ultrasound of course :-)

OK, I was skeptical of that practice when you first started describing the details of what they had told you, but after that response from the nurse I have much less faith. If a nurse doesn't necessarily have as much info as an OB, fine, but then they need to be more responsible about giving inaccurate info. I hear you on delivering at a hospital you know you like but surely there are other practices that deliver at that hospital? Also, you had a quick quick labor with R right? Chances are this one will be even quicker and not likely to involve a ton of time spent in labor in the hospital? Have you spoken to the OB you like at all since you got back the beta results?

@pachamama: I found that in my last successful pregnancy, I really had to advocate for myself to get the care I knew I needed. I ended up with doctors and midwives I trusted and I was really upfront with them about my expectations. The bottom line is that the OB's are there to provide a service to you and if you aren't happy or confident with their service, it would benefit you to be somewhere else.

I'll check back tomorrow. I've got my fingers crossed for you. :)

@Mrs. Cereal: I agree that it might be time to switch. It's a tough one though, because I LOVE the hospital I would deliver in (had a great experience there with #1 that I might not have had if I was in the other big hospitals nearby) and my one OB I really like- WHEN I actually talk to her. It's also super convenient to work. But I sort of don't trust them and that's very important when you're as an anxious psycho like me...
@PurplePumps: see above.. and yeah, I was like ok so if my HCG is 15k and it doubles every 48 hours.... I will be in the millions pretty soon. She was like Um yeah that's wrong. I was like no dude it's basic math. @Truth Bombs: I think she was uninformed, but it was only 20% in 48 hours so maybe that's why they're concerned ? :-(

@pachamama: After your last update I think it might be time to look for a new OB or find an RE. I would just have zero patience for an OB telling ME wrong data like that. My old OB INSISTED that *everyone* ovulates on CD21, and that my months of charts that clearly showed a temp rise around CD35 and then a period 14 days later were "wrong" and I just happen to have a bleed. I swear I dunno how they have their degrees when they don't know something so simple.
My RE stopped checking beta levels after 5.5 weeks cause he said they don't double anymore and wouldn't tell us anything. After a sac/fetal pole can be seen, the measurements were a more accurate indication of growth and fetal health than HCG level.

As someone who has had a couple miscarriages, I think one of the most important aspects of your care in pregnancy after experiencing miscarriage(s) is to find a doctor and a practice that makes you feel secure and comfortable. From what you are saying, this practice does not give that vibe. If I were you, I would seriously consider looking for a different doctor to go to.

I really hope the ultrasound is good and all this worry was for nothing. As everyone else said, my doctor didn't even bother re-testing beta after 5.5 weeks because it doesn't show anything and can cause fear when it's not necessary. Sorry you are going through this. It sucks that you've had to spend the weekend and all day today worrying about this.

@pachamama: I had 5 betas due to barely doubling levels and not super high levels, my doctor stopped testing once I hit 1,000 and scheduled my first ultrasound for 5+3 where we saw a sack and at 6+3 we saw the heartbeat and at 6+6 I heard the heartbeat on ultrasound. My last beta was done right around 5 weeks. My doctor said that after 1000 an ultrasound was a better indicator of what was going on. I hope the ultrasound is able to sort everything out for you and you don't spend the day worrying.

@pachamama: Yeah that nurse is wrong. After 6,000 the doubling time slows way down. I did betas at 6 weeks with my son and if I remember correctly it was something like 10,000 to 15,000 in 48 hours and my doc was totally cool with that. My son is now a happy healthy 2 year old.

@pachamama: I hate to say it, but sometimes OB offices are not good sources of information. I'm pregnant and dealing with this now. The OB and the nurse have consistently given me contradictory info, and have twice already told me stuff that caused me to panic and lose sleep, only to be all "oh, never mind, we checked the record again and you're fine!" It really sounds like your betas might be fine but your office is not so good. Try not to worry *hugs* and I hope you have an ultrasound soon and can see the heartbeat.

@pachamama: i'm not a medical professional myself, but my doctor wouldn't even tell me beta levels after five weeks because she said they just weren't that useful anymore. setting aside whether they are operating with accurate information, it doesn't really sound like either the OB or the nurse are giving you the type of care or attention you deserve, and causing you so much stress to boot! i am really thinking good thoughts for you for tomorrow's ultrasound.

I called the nurse ("OBs too busy to talk to me") and she said she don't know what I was reading but it absolutely should have doubled. When I pressed her on the math, she said "that's what we've always done. That's what the docs look for. It should double. I don't know where you're getting that wrong information."
They forced me to come in for beta blood work so I did, but they did schedule an u/s for tomorrow afternoon. I should be seeing the numbers double, 5 days later. I'm just about having a panic attack here at work. I really am freaking out.

@thepaperbutterfly: yeah I have come to the conclusion I'm not relying on betas. I don't need more stress, I'd like a definitive answer and I think a heartbeat will tell me either way.
@WinterBee: like she had NO inkling it should slow down. she was like "how far along are you?" She prob wasn't even looking at my chart. It was LITERALLY 35 seconds before their office closed.
