@Maysprout: The pediatrician has been playing phone tag with me today. I'll be interested to see what he has to say. I might ask his opinion on contacting the ultrasound place, or ask him if he's encountered this before.

@HabesBabe: Totally similar! It definitely causes undue stress. But then, isn't it nice to have the knowledge that allows you to be proactive early in their life?

@jhd: Yeah, insurance = can-o-worms. Thank you!

@oliviaoblivia: You're right - focus on the positive. Healthy baby - and now that I'm done having kids, no more ultrasounds with crazy results ;)

@blackbird: Yeah, that's true. I've wrestled with the idea that the medical field has a lot of unknowns. I just think there should always be caveats with ultrasounds when the baby is on the inside. But I guess that's what this was, and why we had this follow up. The price tag always blows though.

@californiadreams: The stress factor is definitely something that I could have done without. It was at the same ultrasound that they noticed his fluid was low and what ultimately caused his early arrival. So I was worried about the fluids and his life with one kidney.

@hellobeeboston: I had an ultrasound earlier in the pregnancy, but at that time there were no red flags on his kidneys. I'm sure I could go through all sorts of crazy to get my money back, but I don't know that I have the time or energy. Still - kind of nuts!

@Mama Bird: It really is great news. But yeah - how did they miss that?

I would definitely bring it up to the dr who read the ultrasound and write a letter to the practice. A kidney is a fairly big thing to miss, or if they were unsure because of the way the baby was situated they should have been more clear about that. But I would definitely bring it up to several people to hopefully save other parents that headache in the future.

Just focus on the good news. He's perfectly healthy.

The money and time sucks but having a healthy baby is sooo much more important than that.

Kind of a similar situation, but when I had my 12-week U/S, they said the baby had a thickened bladder wall, and wanted me to come back in for regular U/S throughout my pregnancy to monitor it. I, of course, panicked and Googled and thought the worst case scenario was going to happen.

MANY U/S (including one right after he was born, in the hospital) and a visit to a pediatric urologist later, the specialist literally asked us, "Why are you guys here again? Everything looks perfectly normal." So all of these freaking for 8+ months was for nothing.

How many times will you go to the pediatrician for ear infections that aren't actually there, you know? I'm glad your kid is ok.

no insurance stories, but that is very frustrating nonetheless...even from the perspective of how much stress it must have caused you worrying about it!!

That's awesome news really! I know you're mad about the unnecessary time and costs, but so great that he's fine! How did they miss a kidney on the ultrasound though? You'd think they would look extra closely if they thought one was missing...

Wow. That is great, but crazy that they missed an entire kidney in an ultrasound?!? Did you have more than one U.S.? Or just one or two?? I wonder if you can call your insurance and see if there is something you can do to get your money back? I have no idea, hopefully someone here will have an idea for you. Glad your LO is all good though!!

I posted about 7 weeks ago that they noticed my son only had one kidney in my 36w ultrasound. It wasn't anything to be alarmed about, and I was told to follow-up with his pediatrician once he was born. I was a little sad about it, but also relieved thinking he wouldn't be playing any high impact sports.

Fast-forward. He's born early. We schedule an ultrasound, per the pediatrician's request, to have a look at his kidneys once he's on the outside. He's only 7 weeks old so there's no way he's met his deductible. I pay it off in order to have decent coverage of this ultrasound. A PRETTY PENNY to pay it off...and we find out today, he's got two perfectly good kidneys.

Sigh...

Of course we are thrilled. He's just fine. Not that one kidney was anything horrible. But still! This morning my husband took 4 hours off work, we drove out to a special children's hospital, we spent time and money that wasn't necessary - because he has 2 KIDNEYS!

I feel like I should ask for a refund. But I guess this is just life, right? Just had to vent. Anyone else have any insurance stories to share?
