So frustrating! I'd probably do a lot of sniff-testing. I'd throw out meat, probably milk. Cheese and condiments I would likely keep. Except mayo, I'd probably toss that. Last time our power was out for several days, I kept ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, jam, maple syrup, etc. and all were fine.

DH did this with the freezer a few weeks ago, and I seriously wanted to beat him. I was SO mad. I'm super pregnant and he ruined my 3 boxes of popsicles! Grrrrrr.

Ugh, that's frustrating. I would probably toss most things, it's not worth it just in case you get sick.

Your post also makes me think about how I left the big freezer in our garage open (on accident) before we left on a 2 week vacation. I think I was about 10 at the time! We came back to soooo much spoiled food and most of it was expensive meat :bummed: my parents were not happy! Also, it was disgusting to clean up :silly:

@Foodnerd81: yeah, it's insane. he works evenings and sometimes into the night. on the nights that he works late, he eats cereal and cookies, like the entire package while he's working. it's like zombie-eating.

@rachiecakes: @lemondrop: wait- it's that hard for them (as in, grown adults) to remember to close the door?? I can see it happening on a rare occasion by accident but often enough to want an alarm? I thought those fm were for ten year old boys!

I don't have good advice on what to toss or anything but I do love Peapod on rare occasions.

@rachiecakes: You can get a alarm separate from the fridge! There's a bunch of door sensors on Amazon, they are pretty cheap too...

Hope you're able to salvage most of your food!!!

@rachiecakes: That's hard, and it's not like they are a small easy purchase either! Took us a long time to be able to afford one.

I've done painter's tape across the door before too, just as an extra step to make sure he closes it after repeat offenses.

OH YEAH, huge point of contention in our house. It happened very frequently, so I did feed him some of the stuff eventually, I was so pissed. He has guts of steel though.

I gave him a list of things to replace and said we are eating all meals out until he goes shopping. That got things moving quickly :silly:

Finally it came time to replace the fridge, I bought one with an alarm if the door is left open.

@rachiecakes: We had a weeks vacation with a friend recently and someone left the fridge door open while we were out all day. We threw out meat and dumped the cow's milk (and the butter because the light bulb actually melted it! ) but everything else was OK. We ate the cheese and yogurt and drank the almond milk with no issues. Fruits, veggies, and condiments should be fine!

Ugh. That really sucks.
I'm fairly cavalier with food safety so I'd probably only toss any meat or dairy (actually I'd keep cheese, yogurt, butter).
Maybe just feed the questionable stuff to your DH. :silly:
