We have an HE top loader (new as of a few months ago) and it works fine! I run a plain rinse cycle first (which took a little bit of figuring out to find how that worked but it does it) and then put in the wash cycle. I feel like with the rinse it gets heavy enough to have the water it needs, but it also has a deep water cycle, but I'm worried that would be too soupy to wash. There is the occasional diaper that makes it through about once a week that somehow didn't get the poop clean - it got tucked in the pail liner or wadded in a ball or something, but I just put it in the next wash and it's fine. That being said, our last rental also had a top loader without an agitator (can't remember if it was HE as well) so I've never used the "best" washers for cloth diapers.

ETA: Our wash routine is this: plain rinse/spin, then "whites" wash on heavy duty with "clean boost" (whatever that is) with a scoop of Tide powder. No extra rinse (I never really saw a difference so I stopped). Then hang dry pockets and inserts/wipes in dryer.

We have an HE washer and CD'd my daughter until she potty trained. For a long time, I did the rinse/spin option before hand, and then a regular wash. Occasionally we would use "sanitize" option, but really we have never had any issues with our diapers. Some ammonia smells, but that stopped when I just started using a regular wash cycle with no extra rinse at the end. Weird.

Hope your LO feels better soon! There is a Bum Genius CD group on FB that has lots of CD/HE info.

I didn't realize until after we bought our washer that it doesn't have a pre-wash function. I was glad that we don't CD any more because I didn't even think to check for that feature, I just assumed it would be there.

What you could do instead is run a rinse and spin cycle, and then run a regular cycle, maybe the deep water wash.

We have an HE washer that doesn't have a pre-wash setting. We generally use a "rinse&spin" cycle before the longest & heaviest wash cycle that it has. If has been 3 days since we last did diaper laundry or this particular load is just extra gross, we run the shortest wash cycle (delicate) as a prewash instead of the rinse&spin.

@Chillybear: I miss them. We quit using them a few months ago because H kept peeing out of them and I was doing so much laundry.

I hope your new washer works well for them!

We're going to the store tonight to look at it in person. I'm hoping the "Deep water wash" and the "Soak" function are similar to what we've been using.... otherwise we might be done with CDs

Oh my friend, I'm so sorry. I'm bumping this for you!

You could throw a towel in with your diapers to trick the washer into thinking you need more water.

Fun times at my house last night! My LO came home from daycare with a stomach bug and a bag of clothes and sheets to be washed. My husband started a load of wash and when I went down to change it the whole basement smelled like burning and the washer drum was full of water. Pretty sure we burnt out the motor.

So we started looking at washing machines online to replace it and are leaning toward this one http://www.lowes.com/pd_670294-46-MVWC415EW_1z0viucZ1z11pmgZ2zgmm__?productId=50382486&pl=1

Its HE and has a wash plate instead of an agitator it also doesnt have a Prewash cycle I'm also worried since its HE it wont put enough water into the drum to really clean the diapers. Any one else have a similar washing machine that can tell me how to wash/what settings/soap to use?

With the old washer I would do a prewash on cold, Add Tide powder then run heavy duty on hot with an extra rinse cycle then hang to dry.

thanks for the help
Sincerely,
Up to my elbows in dirty laundry
