I am glad your lo will be OK. What an awful situation. I would try talking to your work again working as high up the chain of command as you can and if that fails I think a lawyer is in order, $10,000 due to a mistake that had nothing to do with you is absolutely unreasonable and they need to make it right.

@Lilbear: that sounds illegal! I mean if they have to provide insurance for you (I'm assuming it falls under the ACA) then they can't just "accidentally" not. I would keep calling and demanding to speak to someone else. If all else fails does your state have an auditor or commissioner of insurance whose office you can call?

I got a letter a week after my daughter was out of the NICU for jaundice at birth that her last two days weren't covered. So I freak out and start writing down stuff I needed to make sure we got it covered like records and letters from the doctor... 2 days later, I got a letter that everything was covered. Then 4 months later after we paid our bill, got a bio for $250 because they said it was misbilled. And I fought it and won. And somehow got a $25 overpayment check. So sometimes it works out. But it's a pain in the neck!

@Lilbear: I am so sorry that you're having to deal with this! I can relate. When my daughter was 4 months, she broke her leg after my husband slipped on ice while holding her. It was an absolute nightmare. 3 days in the hospital, surgery, $40,000+ in medical bills when all was said and done. All we should have been worried about was kiddo, but the money and insurance and everything was so stressful.

We discovered while in the hospital that there had been a clerical error with my coverage as well (I was still on leave) and my insurance had lapsed. Thankfully, it all worked out in the end.

Insurance is this country is horrific.

@Lilbear: I'm sorry. :( Sonething similar happened when my then five week old was in the hospital. First they tried to bill us for everything then just for the dr and pathology and we only recently got it cleared up once and for all. (ETA he's nine months now!!) When all is said and done I am still happy with the coverage and it was all clerical. But it was stressful in the moment and I'm sorry you have to go through that!!

Thanks for the support ladies! I am sure this whole thing will eventually get resolved, but what a pain in the neck. I am beyond grateful that my son's medical issues are not life threatening, but this is almost inhumane the way insurance picks and chooses what they will cover. As if ANYBODY with a sick family member (or is sick themselves) needs that extra headache! My situation is just beyond dumb, because I followed the rules and I still am without coverage due to someone else's mistake. Of course this doesn't get brought to my attention until we have health problems and hospitalizations for my newborn. :(

@Lilbear: I'm so sorry you are going through this. It is so incredibly stressful. We got a six figure bill in the mail for from our hospital when our insurance decided they didn't want to pay for my son's 3 weeks there in the NICU. It's just ridiculous. Eventually everything worked out but it took a while. I hope your son's health continues to improve and that everything works out with the insurance.

@mrsjazz: Should they have let you bleed out instead of saving your life?

Insurance is awful. Mine haven't been as terrible, but Imve had to appeal several ER trips at an in-network hospital because there is always one doctor who doesn't accept my insurance. The first time was annoying but fine; they ultimately covered it, but the second time I had to shell out $400 for his fees because I hadn't yet met my deductible.

@Amorini: exactly! "doctor ordered" should be enough. my doctor sent me to the emergency room and I am being penalized for it by my dumb ass insurance company.

Everyone jokes about the IRS being evil but it's the insurance companies. We need universal healthcare!

@Lilbear: I'm so sorry you're dealing with this while your son is sick. DH's employer randomly cancelled my insurance when I was 8 months pregnant. I think the insurance company worked it out with his employer but I know we didn't pay.

I don't know anything about schools but if you have a union could they help you get it sorted out?

@Lilbear: Ugh, I am so sorry that this happened! This happened to us, though it was a MUCH smaller issue! When I gave notice, my employer agreed to extend my last day to the next month so that my DH's root canal would be covered. They ended up accidentally canceling his coverage and we didn't find out until the bill came. Fortunately, my (by then) ex-employer worked it out and the coverage was retroactive. I'm sure you've exhausted every angle but it seems like your employer should have some pull here. Anyway, I'm glad it sounds like some things are working out and your DS is getting good care and I really hope the end of the medical issues and insurance woes are in sight! I agree with you about insurance being the last thing you can possibly deal with...and how insane our system is.

@mrsjazz: Ugh, you, too! I hate them for you!! I had a breast lump scare and they didn't cover my mammo/us because it was diagnostic and not preventative care. Who is reading the fine print in those types of traumatic situations?! I was literally 6 weeks away from turning 40 and having my first preventative mammo, but I was hoping to (and was!) pregnant by then....and certainly wasn't going to do a mammo then! They are sick and inhuman for drawing the boundaries on what is "necessary"... especially as it so directly relates to their profit margin. um, if a doctor orders it, it's necessary!!!

@Lilbear: Glad your son will be okay and that they agreed to finally pay it.

I just had a similar vent to a co-worker. It sucks to be sick or have a sick loved one to care for and battle insurance companies. I just had an appeal denied by my insurance company -- my blood transfusion was deemed not medically necessary. I hate them.

Ladies, I am so fed up with my insurance coverage situation right now! I took a 12 week maternity (FMLA) leave when my son was born in March, and half of my benefits (rx/dental/vision) all got cancelled due to a clerical error. The payroll secretary at my school never notified them when I returned from my maternity leave, so they have me listed as "inactive" in their system. The rep I spoke to also said that I will not be covered retroactively for claims that we have submitted during this lapsed time, even though it was a clerical error and not my fault. (I just found out today, but it lapsed about a month ago.)

Normally this wouldn't be such a huge deal, but my almost 4 month old son has been having some health care issues. He started having seizures two weeks ago. We were in the hospital for 3 days and they also detected that he had a UTI. Now we have to go back to the hospital this Friday for a vcug to see if he has kidney reflux (because of the UTI). He's taking seizure medication and just finished an antibiotic for the UTI. If he does have kidney reflux, he will need more antibiotics and possibly surgery depending on the severity of the reflux.

Last week I got a letter from my insurance company saying at this point they aren't covering the 3 days in the hospital, because they haven't yet been notified by the hospital whether his treatment was necessary.... I got a 2nd letter today saying that they are covering it, because the hospital did finally contact them on our behalf. Wtf?! Does anyone really need this extra stress while their baby is being treated in a hospital?!?!

Thankfully, my son is going to be okay with time - we just have to get through this next test (vcug) and figure out what medicine and dosages are going to work best for the seizures. Regardless, it has been an extremely stressful and shitty 2 weeks. This insurance bullshit is the last thing we need.

I wish we lived in a country with universal health care coverage for everyone, so we could focus on caring for our loved ones, instead of fighting with insurance companies over this nonsense.
